I’m playing in a home brew campaign and I’ve been using D&D Beyond to track my character because I use it in my own campaigns. My current DM created a ring that my character happened to find so I’m trying to create it as a home brew item and am having an issue. Not sure if I’m just not sure how to do it since I’m new at it or if it’s just not able to be done and I’ll just have to make sure I add the damage on my own.
The ring is as follows:
A golden ring with a red gem. When attuned and activated during battle, the red gem encircles the ring and fire envelopes your hands and then travels to whatever weapon you are wielding. This flame adds fire damage equal to your level with every attack.
(If you are using an axe, the blade is on fire, with a bow, the arrowhead is on fire, and if you are simply punching as a monk, your fists are on fire)
I can create the ring and I mark a modifier of “Damage-Fire” and set the Fixed Value at my current level (5). The issue I’m having is how do I get it to add to my attacks? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
So I took a different approach and created a cantrip called Encompassing Flame which adds +5 to damage and attached it to the ring and set it to scale +1 per level. I’m thinking this may be the only way to represent this item using the magic item creator. I’ll just have to remember to add the fire damage with my attacks. If anyone has any suggestions of another way to do this I’m eager to learn more ways to use the creators.
Why not take one of the Flame Tongue swords and make a copy of it, change the item type to Ring, and then change the damage modifier. Should be able to just activate it then and it would work like a Flame Tongue on every attack.
Tried that. Looks like as soon as I switched it to a ring everything looks the same as when I made it from scratch. Except for the warning that it’s too close to an existing official or published item lol. Looks like I may have to just create the item and mentally remember to add the damage. Unless I’m missing something obvious since I haven’t created much on here.

Yeah I know. I only mentioned it because it was the only difference between the two.
I was hoping I’d be able to set it so that I could activate the ring on my character sheet and have it show on the damage. At least I can make it require attunement, I’ll just have to remember it’s there when it comes to combat lol.
