This was the random musings that led to me making a cantrip spell... Introducing Trick Shot
Basically the thought process behind the spell was actually to create more of an RP style of cantrip for arcane tricksters, bards, trickery domain clerics, and wild magic sorcerers to either impress NPC's or to make bets against in a bar, or that could be used to make your target think someone else threw a coin at them to create shenanigans which would always hit with the damage of an improvised attack at long range. The automatic hit aspect I included made me think of how silly it would be if magic missile was just some dude throwing money that auto hit at people, so I bumped the damage up to 1d4 + 1 and made it deal force damage instead of bludgeoning because come on...it is funny.
I thought about possibly making it a level 1 spell instead of a cantrip, and giving it more damage than magic missile but making you need to throw gold coins, and having the cost increase with spell level ( Meowth uses Coin Toss) but I know I'd just want to over-tune it and make it to where you could shotgun people with gold which would be hilarious which would be broken to all hell.
So thoughts? Is it in fact a good RP tool, or is it too good because it is an auto-hit cantrip that only uses a silver coin per cast?
