I didn’t get any takers last time I made this post; let's see if 3 months makes a difference.
Game: D&D 5e
Group type: Online
Experience: Roughly 6-7 years 5th Edition
Location/Timezone: EST
Schedule: Weekly on Saturday at 5 PM EST
Roles Sought: Looking for 5 players
Game Style: Primarily a combat-heavy dungeon crawl, albeit with a lot of roleplay/social interactions in the beginning
Hello! My name is Alexander (31, he/him). A beloved staple of Dungeons & Dragons is playing “The Greyhawk Sequence,” in which three 1e adventures are stitched together back-to-back-to-back to create an entire campaign. I’d like to run The Greyhawk Sequence, but set in Forgotten Realms and updated for 5th Edition rules (hereafter named The Forgotten Realms Sequence), because both are what I know how to run.
IMPORTANT: I am a man who likes to use sex jokes and other forms of inappropriate humor; due to my inability to read my audience, I lost players who were part of a friend group of 2+ years after I did it enough times to make them uncomfortable with me. I’m trying to cut back on it, but it’s not going to happen overnight, and I guarantee you there WILL be some of those jokes in this campaign. All of that to say: if you are a minor, or you are uncomfortable with, unamused by, or just have a general dislike for sexual humor and other out-of-pocket behavior, please do not respond to this post.
And most of all, if you join and decide you don’t like the jokes I make after all, TELL ME CLEARLY. That means no clever euphemisms or subtle hints; I’m on the spectrum, so unless you say the words “Red, this is making me uncomfortable, please stop,” it'll go right over my head, and everyone’s experience will be ruined.
Campaign Information
For the uninitiated, the three adventures in The Forgotten Realms Sequence, in order, are: The Temple of Elemental Evil, Scourge of the Slave Lords, and Queen of the Spiders. Since 5e technically already covered ToEE in the form of Princes of the Apocalypse, this campaign will be a prequel of sorts, set in DR 1441, 50 years before the start of PotA. Sessions are weekly every Saturday from 5 PM to 9 PM Eastern Standard Time (GMT +4). We use Discord to talk, and we play on Forge VTT. You can use DnD Beyond to create your characters, but that’ll be where the use of D&D Beyond begins and ends; all other features (leveling up, obtaining magic items, etc.) will be done on Forge. This will be a long-term campaign that will take your characters from 1 to 20.
Speaking of long-term, I need a thinly-veiled excuse to poorly segue into informing you all in advance that The Forgotten Realms Sequence is really. Freaking. HARD. Seriously, this campaign, particularly The Temple of Elemental Evil, would turn Gandhi into a murderer, and it’s not uncommon for players to accuse the DM (sometimes falsely, other times… not so much) of playing the game against them in order to force a TPK. This campaign is not for the faint of heart, nor for players who get attached to their characters early on (or at all).
Requirements for Applying
As I’m 31 years old, I’d prefer players within that age group, so it’s highly recommended that you’re in your late 20s/early 30s; however, I will allow players as young as 21 years old. You must have a minimum of 2 years of experience playing Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition and using Foundry; my brain tends to operate on the logic of “if I know what I’m talking about, so do you,” so I’d be an atrocious teacher. You must have a Discord account, a Forge VTT account, and a working microphone or headset. Please make sure you can routinely show up on time. Obviously, real life happens, but always try to shoot me a heads-up ASAP if you know you'll miss a session. If you fail to attend without telling me beforehand, and you don’t offer an explanation within 24 hours of game time, you will be kicked from the game, no questions asked.
Please be willing to interact, roleplay, and communicate with your fellow players and me; I don't mind quiet players (as I am one myself), but I do mind uninterested players.
House Rules
With the exception of attack rolls, the total rolled of a d20 supersedes whether it rolled a natural 1 or 20.
You can use Noncore D&D content, but not Dragonlance, Eberron, or Planescape.
You can roll for stats or use point buy. When rolling for stats, you reroll 1s, you roll 7 sets of dice and drop the lowest total, and if your highest ability score is 13 or fewer, you can reroll everything. If you are unsatisfied with the rolled result, you may use point buy instead.
Every ASI comes with a free Feat.
Critical hits deal maximum damage plus normal rolls and modifiers. e.g., A rogue that usually deals 1d4 + 1d6 + 3 damage with a sneak attack and therefore 2d4 + 2d6 + 3 on a critical hit would instead deal 1d4+1d6+4+6+3 on a critical hit (as if they had rolled the maximum for one of each of the dice).
Some subclasses have been revised to improve areas where they were lacking (e.g., Berserker's don't get exhausted after using Frenzy, Lunar Sorcerers can no longer swap their Lunar Phases, Way of Four Elements receives 3 additional disciplines, etc.).
All Sorcerer subclasses will receive extra spells like all subclasses post-Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.
All Cleric subclasses will receive one additional domain spell at levels 11, 13, 15, and 17, except for the Arcana Domain, which already has a similar feature.
Some spells have been tweaked/buffed (e.g., Finger of Death's damage is increased to 10d8 + 50, Silence is on a Wizard's spell list, Stoneskin doesn't consume material components, etc.).
Potions can be used as a bonus action.
The campaign will use the Epic Heroism rest variant from the DMG. This means short rests take 5 minutes, and long rests take 1 hour. However, spellcasters can only restore expended spell slots equal to half their maximum (rounded down) at the end of a long rest and only 5th level or lower. Only a full 8-hour rest will allow a spellcaster to restore all spell slots and regain 6th-level or higher spell slots.
Like with RAW, if you cast a spell from a scroll that’s part of your class’s list while knowing spells of that level, you cast it for free. However, if it’s not on your list or level, you must roll an Arcana check with a DC of 10 + spell level in order to cast the spell.
Rations will not factor into gameplay, but ammunition will.
All spells that heal a humanoid’s hit points can be used on the undead to damage them. Similarly, Necrotic damage heals the undead.
Rangers can prepare their spells like a Cleric, Paladin, or Druid.
Some homebrewed spells are labeled “Evil” and “Good.” Characters of any alignment can use these spells, but if a creature of a different alignment casts one of these spells, its alignment shifts toward the alignment of the spell by one step for every three uses of such spells.
Readying a spell does not require concentration.
If you are so inclined, you may play a Lycanthrope or Vampire character.
Finally, while this is really more of a suggestion than a house rule, I have some homebrewed races and subclasses I’d like to have playtested, and I would appreciate it if you chose one of them and gave me occasional feedback.
If you’ve made it this far and are still interested, send me a PM with your name, age, and years of experience, and we’ll have a mini interview to see if we’ll add each other on Discord. See you then!
