I just reached level 4 and I'm looking for a good feat. My monk got knocked out in his first battle so I would love a self heal feat. But not opposed to other options.
St 13, Dx 15, Con 17, Int 12, Wis 10, Chr 8
Was thinking: shadow touched (int) and taking false life to give me some temporary HP or if I'm able to take magic initiate cleric with toll the dead, sacred flame and guiding bolt to give me some ranged options
Your biggest problem is your low AC and that glaring weakness will only get worse as the enemies get tougher. I suggest asking your DM to see if they would allow you to redistribute your Ability Scores because at they stand atm even a Wizard with Mage Armor will be harder to hit than you.
With that being said I suppose you could try the Fighting Initiate feat to grab Blind Fighting. This can be paired with the Darkness spell that Shadow Monks have access to for a little more protection in the form of giving your enemies disadvantage while attacking you while at the same time giving you advantage on your attacks. Do note however that the Darkness spell tends to annoy team mates that cannot see in magical darkness.
I don't like Shadow touched with this build unless you are going to multiclass. I don't think false life is enough temp hps also you can go invisible at will in dim light at 11th level.
Magic initiate Cleric is better. I really like protection from evil and good with that on a Monk.
Your stats are not great for a Monk. I would consider an ASI boosting both dex and Constitution.. What is your race?
According to the title the OP's character is a Variant Human Way of the Shadow Monk. It would be nice to know what feat the OP chose when they created their character though.
I have to agree with TheLonelyMagi that to me a glaring problem is your stat allocation. As a monk Dexterity really should be your highest stat as it improves your accuracy, damage, armor class, and many useful skills like Stealth or Acrobatics. Even worse though is the fact that Wisdom is your second lowest stat. With a Wisdom of 10 your Unarmored Defense feature is doing nothing for you and the DC for all your ki abilities like Stunning Strike(when you get it) and Minor Illusion will be terrible. Also if you picked Magic Initiate and chose Cleric then Wisdom would be the ability modifier you use for your save DCs and/or spell attacks. Strength, Charisma, and Intelligence are generally the least important stats for a Monk with Strength being the most useless (Unless you go for a grapple build).
Assuming you keep your attributes as they are though then as ECMO3 says the best thing you can probably do with your ASI is use it increase both your Dexterity and your Constitution. Increasing your Dexterity to 16 will mean your AC, to hit bonus, and damage rolls all go up by one, increasing your Constitution to 18 gives you 4 more max hit points and 1 more max hit point for each level after. If the higher AC causes even one attack to miss then that alone will likely prevent more damage than the average 6.5 hit points you would get from False Life. If you really want a feat then Skill Expert will let you increase your Dexterity to 16 and give you expertise in an important skill, like Stealth, and give you a new skill proficiency.
If you are looking for a ranged attack option then you should get yourself some Javelins. They count as a Monk weapon, they have the largest range of any thrown weapon, and with a 1d6 damage die they are among the higher damaging Monk weapons. Also remember you have Patient Defense, forcing enemies attacking you to attack at disadvantage is very significant. If you need to stay up and don't think you can finish off the enemies attacking with Flurry of Blows then you should either Step of the Wind to get away or use Patient Defense to stand your ground. Also if you are about to get targeted by a bunch of ranged attacks then Patient Defense and Deflect Missiles will really save your skin.
ASI dex/con then take your next level in barbarian. Alternately aberrant dragonmark gets you some con based spell attacks for a ranged option and you can grab a defensive spell like mage armor or false life.

The character does not have enough WIS to multiclass.
Talk to your DM about redistributing your stats...

St 8, Dx 17, Con 13, Int 10, Wis 15, Cha 12. This ups your AC from 12 to a 15. Spend your first ASI on Dex and Wis and you are up to a 17 AC. If you haven't taken your VH feat, mobility isn't bad. You can't get hit if you aren't around.
I agree with many of the others. Reallocating stats would be the best option. But if you can’t, skip the feats and ASI Dex/Con at 4th and Dex +2 the next two ASI’s to max it at 20 asap. At least that’s my take on it.

So they don't.
