They have recently viewed the monk in the new players handbook, which makes me intrigued to want to play one. I’ve always liked the idea of acrobatic monk. And I noticed the spell Jump has been significantly improved. Has anyone considered the Otherworldly Leap invocation on a monk. At Will jumping seems like it could be amazing. Is it possible? What do you think?
Their lack of strength typically makes them bad jumpers (which I find terribly unsuited for the class fantasy). The spell is defo a way around it. However it's only a real boon early on as the monks ability to walk up vertical surfaces kinda does the same thing for the most part.
It still has a few niche uses, but why Jump? Monks are't spellcasters and their stat spread is still necessarily focused on DEX and WIS. Better to just go Aarakocra for the flight is your really want increased maneuverability.
Jump is pretty awesome in play and is a nice 20 foot movement bonus every round after you cast it, walking up walls is not really a substitute, as these don't give you the movement bonus and the walking on walls, only works when there is walls, while you can jump over enemies whether or not there are walls. You can also jump into the air and grapple flying enemies.
I am playing a Monk multiclass that has it, but I would call the Character a Rogue more than a Monk. Currently Scout Rogue 4/Wizard 1/Monk 2. She has Jump and uses it quite a bit, she also has the Grappler feat. She is not really a Monk, but the mobility it gives you is pretty awesome.
That said, on a PC that is basically/primarily a Monk which you want to play like a Monk, the Invocation requires two levels of Warlock, which is a significant bite into your Monk levels. Other ways to do it are with Magic Initiate, which would give you once a day, or a 1-level Wizard or Druid dip. Wizard would give it to you 3 times a day, along with a number of ritual spells, Druid twice a day along with speak with animals. All of these give you some Cantrips too.
Finally, I don't know that you need it at will. There is a bonus action tax to casting it and that is pretty steep considering all a Monk can do as a bonus action. To me this makes the other options more attractive.
