I was just Reading a different thread where would people were talking about "proper" monk weapons. And it made me a little confused. I mean the PHB says that monks have access to simple weapons and short swords. And then I realized what complaint was more about naming convention and stat blocks for those weapon names (I think anyway).
(and here's the lazy part)
In the DMG under flavors of fantasy (5E CH.1 P.41) we find "wuxia" and "Wuxia weapon names" chart that re-flavors most if not all the weapons with Chinese and/or Japanese names. So if you wanted your monk to use tonfa then just call them that and use the club stat line. And a naginata uses the glaive stat line and so on.
yep it is true, most of the player didn't realise about Wuxia Weapon Names

Monk class is not a typical monk, they are martial artist. You can flavour it using anything related to martial art.
Example: Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore have martial art called Silat and their famous weapon is Kris (a curvy dagger). They can rename the Dagger to Kris.
Some would argue that Katana should dealt more damage that Longsword in real world, or Kris should deal more damage in real world, for this kind a folk, just tell them "relax, it is a game".

(yes I looked it up, no I didn't re-create chart)
Not that Monks can use glaives but yeah, it literally says right there in the PHB entry for monks that you easily reflavour weapons to be more "traditional" martial arts weapons. Last paragraph of the Martial Arts entry.

I'm going to be a bit lazy here but…
