"That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons, even death may die."
You’ve found yourself here, somehow, in this war-torn world of life, death, and decay, a place of walls spanning hundreds of feet in the air, the march of iron soled boots accompanying every step on the streets - every breath of air in this place reminds you of how far you are from home, the humidity of the blistering swamp sinking into your clothes and skin and grooves of your armor. Yet here you are, whether here for fame, for glory, for honor, for money, or simply for a good time, you have found yourself in the world of Zaidan at the peak of its competitive season. Here, in the nation of Balra, the sprawling commercial city of Glade is home to one of Zaidan’s most deadliest attractions: the Killing Floor. Every year, competitors from all around come by to test their mettle, and Glade is happy to welcome each and every one of its guests. From festivals to tournaments, the Balran Games has a place for nearly everyone and everything looking to have a good time. So welcome, all newcomers and competitors of old, to the truest proving ground on this side of the multiverse!
In the center of the bustling city near the upper shopping district is a rustic, three story building, a freshly painted wooden sign hung on the side of the weathered cherrywood door, reading The Sphinx of Morning, a small emblem of a sun-headed sphinx carved above it. The inside is spacious, with a central garden and cloud-like decor hung from the rafters. The bar rests up against the wall where the barkeep’s rather massive pet red drake lies curled up asleep on the rug, a glint of reflected light shining off of its nametag which seems to read Macai. A training area lies one floor down, where several weapons and other ways to test your skill are freely provided. The food and drinks here are reasonably priced, and it can be assumed the barkeep brings you your order if I or a mod is not online.
Welcome to the Balran Games! Your characters can be from anywhere you’d like, with a few exceptions that will be listed below in the rules (such as no true gods, things like that). This is primarily a roleplay tavern, along with the competitions that will be hosted periodically per request. The main building of this tavern serves as a hub for interaction and signing up for events, as well as exploring and other such activities. Zaidan is a vast and developed world, with many places to visit for those interested, but it is not required in the slightest. So explore, interact, and have fun :)
Rules:
No killing or maiming inside of the tavern or a bouncer will intervene.
Try to be nice and respectful, OOC arguments can be taken to PMs if they get lengthy.
Keep stuff appropriate, no fade to black or 18+ content due to the site’s guidelines. Violence is fine, excessive gore should have a content warning.
Go easy on quote chains please.
Put the name of a video game character in your first post to let me know you read the rules.
Listen to me and the mods. Haven’t picked any mods yet but I’ll update when I do.
Try not to start combat without other people’s consent. If someone doesn’t want to fight, leave it be. If you provoke fights, don’t get upset if those people defend themselves.
This thread will operate under DND 2014 rules, if you’re confused on any rules then PM me and I can clear it up for you.
Please do NOT play unkillable characters or gods. You are allowed to play as the avatar of an extraplanar being, but when the avatar is killed, they cannot be revived and must take 1d4+5 days to reform. Additionally, gods and other extraplanar beings hold no influence in Zaidan, and those creatures are required to disguise what they are to get into the world.
Do not powergame, metagame, or anything of the sort.
Don't kick the hyenas.
More may be added at my discretion.
The Killing Floor:
The central attraction of the Balran Games, the Killing Floor is a massive area of endlessly regenerating undead – adventurers are thrown into the arena and kill these undead for points. These points equal the CR of the creature killed, and the person with the most points after a certain timeframe wins the game. Additionally, these games are separated into tiers of power, so that less powerful adventurers may compete as well, in separate arenas from trained veterans.
If I am not online to run the actual Killing Floor competition, you are free to have your character train there without consequence, though only I can declare a winner. The rules for competing in the Killing Floor is as follows:
You may have a number of magic items and poisons on your person up to your proficiency bonus plus one. If you are an artificer, the items you create using infusions don’t count against this number. You have a number of chips to spend on magic items equal to half of your level (rounded down). The costs are as follows: common (1 chip), uncommon (2 chips), rare (3 chips), very rare (4 chips), legendary (5 chips). Additionally, you may start out with as much gold as you would like, though it cannot exceed 1000. Statblocks cannot be attuned to magic items. If you are a 20th level character, you may have one more magic item or poison of your choice without restriction.
Death is not permanent. If your character dies in the area, they are resurrected afterwards (thanks to free healthcare).
When you kill another competitor, you gain half of the amount of points they had (round down) and add it to your total points.
Points are only gained if you deal the killing blow or dealt half or more of the creature’s health in damage.
You can only have one animal companion or mount at a time, and it can be up to a CR equal to your level minus 3 (minimum of 0).
Homebrew is fine, use one of the following stat arrays if you’re making a character sheet (18 16 14 12 11 7/16 16 16 13 10 8/17 17 12 12 9 9/17 16 15 13 11 8). You may also do rolled stats.
Tournaments and Duels:
Tournaments are held periodically and sporadically, though you are allowed to conduct and bet on duels without me or a mod present. Betting is legal, and you are allowed to bet on yourself but you may only bet on yourself to win, not lose. The rules for duels follow the rules above for the killing floor, in terms of character creation. When you initiate a formal duel with another person, a proctor construct appears to ensure that there is no cheating. The following rules apply as well:
A magical barrier that cannot be passed through, and spells cannot be cast in or out of, forms in a 200 ft radius centered around the combatants. All fights are 30 ft apart unless negotiated otherwise.
Any spells or items or abilities activated before the challenge are turned off, unless their duration is 1 hour or more.
The first person to 0 hp for two or more rounds in a row loses. Any person that dies in a formal duel is resurrected by the proctor.
A duel must be mutually agreed upon. You may also perform 2v2 or 1v2 duels.
Each person is assigned a ranking upon the aftermath of a duel. If it is your first time dueling and you lose, your rank equals 100. If you win and it is your first time dueling, your rank becomes 90. For every win you gain, your rank advances by 5, and for every loss, your rank drops by 10, to a limit of 300. Once someone has reached rank 10 or higher, no one else can reach that rank unless they beat that person in a duel. A person that beats another person in rank 10 or more has their rank automatically set to that of the person they defeated. Additionally, once you reach rank 10, you can only progress by defeating others in ranks 1-10. Each win you get while in rank 10 or more now only counts as 1 rank forward in progression if you’re the only person in rank 10.
Further Zaidan Information:
Zaidan is a coalition comprised of 10 countries, with its ruling country being Beilor. Around the world itself is a magical barrier, preventing extraplanar creatures from entering, such as demons, angels, elementals, and more. Zaidan itself is a heavily enforced police state, with a heavy emphasis on crime management and restriction on use of magic in an exploitative manner. Most of it is swamp, and it is set in a steampunk, dark fantasy genre. It is ruled by the current Imperator, Ascelos Azerlius, with a collection of elected noble houses governing each individual country. Foreigners are allowed to travel into Zaidan through the Beilorian planar port, as long as they have no accompanying criminal record.
Through the center of the continent cuts a massive wall, separating the northern, uninhabited side of Zaidan from the southern 10 countries. Zaidan is defined by war, the wall a remnant of that fact. It is illegal to cross that border. Additionally, almost all Zaidanians are armed and dangerous, training in martial skill and registered on a forced draft. Above all else, respect for the land itself, the Imperator, and the noble houses of Zaidan are enforced without question. Below, I’ll have a brief summary of each country.
Beilor: Sort of the unofficial ruling province of Zaidan, Beilor is home to Zaidan’s standing army and is a massive island, heavily militarized and one of the safest places in Zaidan to live for the most part. Clerics come here to train, and most noble houses seeking better renown appeal to live in Beilor and work there. It’s full of massive cities and one of the three entrances to the Underdark.
Goristran: One of Zaidan’s largest manufacturers, Goristran hosts most of Zaidan’s lumber, artisan goods, and mining. They have two gates into the underdark, and sit on a sort of magic absent area. Goristran is made up of port cuties and uses organized crime to push its goods more efficiently. Private militaries operate here under the authority of the noble house crime families that carve out territories here.
Marilia: The capital of magic, Marilia is home to most of Zaidan’s academies and universities, as well as having mostly private universities (Beilor has public ones, but they’re all generally “religious” and not geared toward arcane magic). Marilia sits on a hotspot of magic caused by a giant icy lake in the center of the country and they hold partial disputed territory along the Zerlu islands.
Falshee: A former bastion of strength and remnant of the kipling empire from the First Calamity, Falshee is a relatively peaceful province that pulls in most of Zaidan’s fish, as well as magma production from its local volcanos. Falshee also manufactures ships and is one of Zaidan’s four major ports.
Zerlu: A province set on ancestral dragon land, Zerlu is a protected and limited area that is inhabited mostly by dragons. Outsiders are allowed in on invitation, and dragons generally keep to their country for safety - illegal dragon hunting is still prominent in Zaidan, and their cadavers fetch a high price.
Vroth: The neighboring country to Goristran and split down the center into East and West Vroth by the country Uraun, Vroth is in a constant territory battle with Uraun and wishes to unite both of its halves by annexing Uraun completely. Vroth is also a big player for Zaidan’s lumber industry and has some of the largest stretches of deciduous forests, as well as having a very diverse and strong array of wildlife. Most mounts that are sold come from Vroth, and Vrothian syndicates partner with Goristran crime families to sell more to the rest of Zaidan, as livestock, pets, and more. Vroth is also notorious for its population of poachers, specifically dragon poachers and giant harvesters.
Anesium: A large swatch of coastland and home to Zaidan’s only southern desert, Anesium is one of the least populated provinces per square mile. Currently military operations are attempting to carve a way through the center of the desert to speed up continental flight paths, meeting resistance from the local creatures, sand dwellers, and other hazards.
Balra: Zaidan’s biggest tourism spot and attraction, Balra is very open and flat, with praries and rolling hills and glittering blue water - but the biggest calling is the killing floor. A section of Balra is cursed to have its undead endlessly regenerate, and as such, Zaidanians have taken to turning this area into a big fighting pit for their own entertainment. Yearly olympic like games are held on the killing floor. Balra is also the single biggest producer of Zaidanian mass agriculture and livestock, producing most of the grown and cultivated food that isn’t aquaculture or rice.
Uraun: One of the smaller territories, one noble house claims dominion over the entire province. This territory houses a place called the Red Mire, where rivers run red from copper rust and supposedly blood of trespassers. The guardian of the Mire is known as Lady Onexia, who keeps the swamp safe from outsiders with her knight order.
Meras: Largely just a military base for Beilor, Meras is a barren training island and an experimental weapon training facility. Most people sent here are in the standing army and rotated out periodically, though two noble houses remain in control of the territory.
For more Zaidan information, consult my unfinished sourcebook here, or PM me and I’ll lore post a bit.
Map of Zaidan:
This is a complete map of current Zaidan, with labeled cities, provinces/countries, as well as other territories. My handwriting is also probably terrible so please let me know if I need to clarify anything. You should all probably start off in Balra unless you’d like to request to start elsewhere, in which case I’ll get back to you to work something out, cause that’ll mean I’ll have to run a little encounter for you.

Behind the counter of the bar is a massive centaur in maybe his mid 30s with silvery fur cropped short and a black toned tail and mane braided with red ribbons. He’s wiping down the counter, a slight frown on his face, his long hair pulled back into a bun, wearing simple clothes with half-plate armor and a mace hung at his side. He raises a hand slightly in greeting.

A brass-scaled dragon similar in size to the innkeeper's pet alights on the roof of the Sphynx. A moment later there's a thud as its rider drops to the street below, then walks through the door. The rider, a human woman with pale skin and red hair in a topknot isn't physically imposing, but her ornate green half plate and matching shield add to a strong sense of poise. Her eyes light up at the sight of Macai, and she walks over to the drake and starts talking to it in Draconic.
Arex the Bold (You will never find the guy I'm talking about.) Really cool thread.
A formidable looking halfing steps out of a dark alleyway in Marilla. He carries a complex contraption, wicked blades sticking out from underneath his cloak.
Nearby, a student of a local school of magic practices. The halflings expression darkens. "Disgusting, one day all of them will be gone." He mutters. He turns around, and heads back into the alleyway. The last thing seen of the man is his wicked blade. Etched into which is a symbol, an arrow surrounded by black thorns.
Spellcasters beware, Thornguage has come to this land.

An echoing cracking sound, not unlike part of stone wall crumbling, is heard outside in the shopping district- one sound runics can make possibly being familiar to many Zaidanians there- as a man practically glowing with the shine of his plate armor appears. He wears a simple crown of some sort, glyphs wrapping around the side carved into the metal. His mane of brown hair grows down to just above his paldrons, framing his well-kept beard and moustache, giving him a somewhat dignified look. On the man's back is a gorgeously made maul - one edge of it coevered in serrated crocodile tooth like edges and the other the head of a hammer crusted in golden blood. The handle is covered in chiseled vines of white marble, gilded with gold and trimmed with black steel. The vines wrap and strangle depictions of crocodilian beasts, the whole piece giving off an almost sad aura. In contrast, the man marches in jubilantly and triumphantly through the street, his very gait itself practically crying out 'HAZZAH!!' as he heads in the direction of the tavern, although slowed a bit by his sometimes getting sidetracked looking at vendors wares and greeting people as he passes
