I personally have been using VTTs for the last couple of years to continue playing with old college friends who live on opposite sides of the country. For the most part, the experience has been good. Existing VTTs do a good job of mimicking the experience of sitting around a table. The problem I've found is that parts of this experience are clunky because an online environment just isn't the same as an in-person one. This could be due to any number of reasons but I've singled out two that I want to focus on.
For many VTTs, representing 3D terrain is impossible.
Combat really slows down the pace of your game.
The first is relatively easily solved but the second is more vague and harder to pinpoint. What I believe can solve this problem is to introduce a virtual tabletop that handles the combat rules for you.
