"I don't think putting all the poles in is the solution... what if we get one or two streams of water flowing into the mouths of certain creatures? Such as... the fish and/or the kraken? What do you guys think?"
17 ”did this really need to be a water room!” Angelino will start putting the poles in the other holes.
Angelino picks up one of the poles, probably with a great exertion and much huffing and distain, and carries it over to the fountain. As you do so, you see George taking a closer look at the door...

George notices that the door is not unadorned. There are words carved into it:
"To open this door, you need only offer water to the thirsty."
"Interesting..." George casts detect magic and focuses it on each head, starting with the fish, then the kraken, then the lizardfolk. If after those three the rest appear to be the same, he stops after 4 heads.
(Side question: is that allowed? I feel like some spells should be illegal here, like knock... I don't know if detect magic would be one of those, though.)

You sense some magic in the water, but none in the heads.
(Detecting magic is a part of the game, and this was originally intended to test these things for future use in actual games! Knock has potential to bypass a lot of these sorts of things, I'd say it's in the interest of a fair trial to avoid using it!)
Alexander pauses, nodding in response to George’s idea. “That makes a lot more sense than letting the water flow all over the floor. Indeed, simply plugging all of the holes seems too easy.” He proceeds to try and arrange the pole in a way that will only shoot water into the mouth of the fish and the kraken.

Just to clarify, the poles arent where the water is coming out! What is it you're trying to do with the poles?
George helps Alexander, taking the poles out from under everything except those two.
The poles slide out easily, and each one removed causes the remaining jets of water to strengthen. You are left with 2 jets of water, spraying over the fish & kraken, over your heads and landing on the floor near the walls in an ever-growing puddle.
"That makes sense. We should get the water into the mouths of the water creatures, like the fish and the kraken." Kay places one of her poles into whichever creature is across from the Kraken.

I was pretty much just going to do what George said he was going to do. I just didn't do a great job explaining that lol.
Since the water is still spraying over the fish and the kraken rather than into their mouths, Alexander will place a pole in the hole under the lizard folk head.
Svarn WildHeart, a silver Half-dragon with a pet psudodragon was busy trying not to go too deep in the water because he could not swim well
"anyone know whats going on?"
Kay notices Svarn after placing the pole. "Another newcomer!" She walks over to him. "Don't worry about the water. It's not that deep. The name's Kay. Short for Kayaws." She extends her hand. "It's good to see another draconic face!" She grins at him.

You put the third pole into the hole under the Goblin head. The streams of water lessen but still splatter into the growing puddle on the floor.

The water streams lessen again as you put a fourth pole into the hole beneath the lizardfolk, and another stream of water arcs over your head and onto the flagstones behind you, the pressure of all of them getting less. The splash from it dampens Angelino's trousers/robes.

As you say this, you glance at the water. Then you look again. It's about 6 inches deep by the rack now, the slightly sloping floor nearly bringing the edge of the puddle up to your feet.

A summary of this room so far:
The room has a door carved with "To open this door, you need only offer water to the thirsty."
There is a round raised pool surrounded by carved heads, facing upwards, with mouths open. The heads are:
goblin
ogre
owlbear
panther
fish
magmin
kraken
dragon
lizardfolk
skeleton
warforged
eagle
There is a rack of poles opposite the door. They are 6ft. long, and when inserted into holes beneath the heads, have thus far caused a jet of water to arc over the head and into the room from the middle of the pool. Each pole added seems t olessen the jet, causing them to reach less of a distance.
Kay shrugs, "I spoke too soon." She looks at George, "Are you sure? I'm thinking that some of the water needs to go into the pool and the others need to go into the water creatures. Every time we place a pole, the water pressure lessens. We can't aim any of the water when the pressure is so high it just hits the wall." She looks at the pole under the goblin, "Then again, there are probably certain heads that shouldn't have a pole underneath them. We just need to figure out which ones." She looks around, "What do you all think?"
In response to Kay, he says, "It seems that if we put too many poles in, the water won't even be able to reach the ones that (presumably) need water flowing into them. It's at least worth a shot to only have poles under the ones that need water (fish, kraken, maybe lizardfolk)." Half to the room in general, and half to himself, he says, "I also wonder if pulling the poles out slightly change the water pressure, so that we can aim the water to go into the mouths...." George sinks into thought for a moment, pondering the message on the door, before his head snaps back up. "What if all we have to do is offer the water to the heads? Not even get it to them... no, that doesn't make sense; the heads don't seem to have any kind of magical properties.... But maybe we can just dump water down their mouths?"
"Thoughts?"

Question: When the water shoots out of the pool, does it hit the wall directly above any of the creatures or is it hitting between them?
The water seems to be shooting directly over the heads of the creatures with poles under them. With 4 poles in (kraken, fish, goblin, lizardfolk), they aren't reaching the walls any more, and are splashing into the steadily deepening puddle on the floor.
17 ”did this really need to be a water room!” Angelino will start putting the poles in the other holes.
