Looking over the Conquest Paladin kit and it seems that this particular paladin really wants their spells (Fear in particular) to land due to the Aura working on frightened creatures.
Would you want to up CHA as much as possible over STR in this build?
I guess it depends on your focus, if you're really into tanking and battlefield control, those fear effects are important. Personally, though, I'd still go str (or dex if that's your thing). Yes, the aura really wants those fear effects to work, but you still want those melee attacks to land and trigger your smites. Now if someone else is doing the damage, and you're mostly there to hold enemies in place, then I'd say the cha can make more sense.
Also, if you haven't thought of it already, a dragonborn who takes the feat to let them use the fear effect in place of their breath weapon can work really well with conquest pallys. (not to mention they get a str and cha bump).

It seems, to me, that while Charisma is important for all paladins, it's more important for Conquest Paladins. Since there seem to be more ways of enhancing your Strength magically, than Charisma (Gauntlets of Ogre Power are only an uncommon, for instance), I could see using your ASI to enhance Charisma first, with a Conquest paladin.

I was also thinking the new Leonin race as well!
Yes, that could work, too and wouldn't need a feat. and the con bump is always good for melee folks. Or anyone, really.
Of course, we're less than two weeks away from tasha's which might let you move the ability score bonuses around, and keep the roar.
