"Do you believe in destiny? That even the powers of time can be altered for a single purpose? That the luckiest man who walks on this earth is the one who finds… true love?"
Bram Stoker, Dracula
Hello, fellow humans!
I am thinking to DM a Play-by-Post game based on Curse of Strahd (CoS for the aficionados). I have experience as a DM but I am fairly new to 5e and I have even less experience with DnD Beyond, so you'll have to be patient with me :p
For those of you who don't know, CoS is a gothic-horror campaign. I am not going to give you spoilers, but be aware that there is going to be mature, morbid and disturbing content and that this campaign works best if I manage to psychologically mess with the players: I will create real stakes for your characters, giving them reason to care about the consequences of their actions and break their spirit. If you are intrigued, you are in the right place already!
What I am looking for is a group of 4 to 5 players that love to role play their character to the fullest: the good and the bad. There will be combat in the campaign (it's still a D&D game after all), but that is definitely not the main focus of CoS. So, power-players begone! This is not going to be a black-and-white game. If you like the idea that even the strongest ideals of the staunchest paladin of Helm can be shattered by the horrors of the night, this is the place you were looking for! Also, don't worry about your experience level with DnD. Novices are more than welcome!
You will start at level 1. For the creation of your character you can use pretty much any official source you like. I am not going to veto any race or class, but I would not recommend races that are too exotic, simply for the fact that you are going to have to deal with a human people that hasn't had much contact with non-humans for all their lives. By "not too exotic" I mean Humans, Helves (and subraces), Half-Helves, Gnomes, Dwarves, Halflings, Tieflings (yes, they are fine), Goliath, Half-Orcs or the likes. Dragonborn? That's quite exotic to me. Tabaxi? you are going to have to convince me. Aasimar? Fine for me. But again, if you really-really-really want to play a Kenku we can work on that, as long as you have a convincing backstory.
Abilities can be rolled (roll 4d6 and discard the lowest dice), point-buy or standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8). Personally I prefer rolled, but let me know if you feel strongly about it or if you rolled really bad :) I will allow feats and the human variant from the PHB. You start with the maximum hit-points for your class (+ Con modifier).
Let's start with you posting the idea of your character and the loose sketch of your backstory. Think about the motivation that could have led you on the adventuring path (are you looking for something? or someone? a legendary object or a missing person?), or any mystery in your past (have you been found as an infant under mysterious circumstances?).
As a default, the initial setting for the adventure is the Sword Coast in the continent of Faerun (from the Forgotten Realms setting). Specifically around city of Daggerford. A description, on which you can draw inspiration from for your backstory, follows:
Daggerford is a small fortified town situated between Waterdeep and Baldur's Gate. The leaders of Daggerford control all the lands bordered by the estate of Floshin on the north, the Lizard Marsh on the west, Dragonspear Castle on the south, and the Misty Forest on the east. Daggerford is an important town as it sits on the Trade Way, connecting Waterdeep and Baldur's Gate, running along the Sword Coast and being a vital commercial route for the region. At the same time, this land is quite dangerous to travel, mostly because of goblinkind, orcs and bandits that are known to predate on the travelers on the Trade Way. Also, ruins of ancient civilizations are known to be scattered in the region and below ground, possibly connecting with the Underdark. It is not uncommon to hear stories of adventurers (that often come to Daggerford to test their mettle) that venture to find the entrance of this or that fabled dungeoun and never come back.
Your character, however, could be from anywhere you like in the DnD multiverse. Think about a reason why you would be traveling along the Sword Coast. If you are not familiar with the Forgotten Realms setting you can give me a backstory that works anywhere and I help you fill in the geographical details. I could give you an adventure hook if you'd like, but I want to see if something emerges spontaneously from you guys. One of you could be leading an expedition and the others are his/her companions or hired guides or bodyguard, for example. We can work on the details together, just want to see where this experiment goes.
If I get flooded with replies I will make a selection and let you know who's in. Once I made my decision I will make the thread private and we can work on the last details of your characters.

Bio: Osso comes from the foothills of the Greypeak Mountains, on the edge of the High Forrest. He has lived there all his life but knows only snippets of why his family lives away from the rest of the Blue Bear tribes.
According to his mother, the family was forced to flee their homeland due to conflicting beliefs around magic. The Uthgardt people have a strong mistrust of magic. His family though, had been touched by divine magic and have come to accept that magic exists and that it is everywhere throughout Faerun. Osso was raised with an understanding that magic, like everything else, can be used for good as well as evil. Not all magics need be feared.
It is with this understanding that Osso takes to the road in the hopes of finding adventure and maybe even to witness magic being used in a positive way, proving his families beliefs to be true.

Race: Human (Variant)
Class: Rogue
Background: Faction Agent
Fiona always had a knack for finding things, her parents would often say she had the nose of a bloodhound, and the eyes of a hawk. These traits would serve her well in Waterdeep, catching the eyes of the Harpers early into her career. The faction kept her busy investigating rumors, chasing ghost stories, and always trying to stay one step ahead of the Zhentarim. It wasn't that she wasn't thankful for her position or ability to explore the city of splendors - she just longed for an actual mystery to solve, a real legend to uncover. With the Harpers' blessing, Fiona set out to Daggerford.

From when he was a little boy, Lorian was always interested in magic. He wanted to study it. Preserve it. As he got older, he learned more types of magic. He was fascinated by every single kind and wanted to learn them all. When he had found out all there was to know in his village, he left in search of more. He went south to Waterdeep, as that was the closest city. While there, he had a terrible accident. He attempted to perform a complex spell that proved to be too difficult for him. It thrust him backwards into a wall, knocking him out. He slipped into a coma, and stayed asleep for so long that the city no longer wanted to pay for the expensive materials keeping him alive. A small group of soldiers laid him on the forest floor outside the city. Some who heard of him built a shack around where he laid, so that he may be comfy if he ever woke up. And he did, soon after. When he woke up, he realized he had seen many vivid dreams, almost like he saw what would happen in the future. It was one he had to prevent. Lorian set out to protect the realm from the nightmarish future he had seen. He remembered a village from one of his dreams: Daggerford.
((If the rolls aren’t great, I’ll go with point buy))
Edit: I’m not trying to make him one of those overpowered characters, I just couldn’t decide on a subclass for when we get to level 2. One option is divination, hence the dreams.
Once there was a girl born into a family in which crime was their trade, and power and results, their main concern. Though she followed in their footsteps almost dutifully, ever fearing being cast aside or worse, the arrival of a masked hero in her life gave her a different sort of hope.
For months upon months, she tried to pursuit this hero, deluding herself that their unmasking might be just the thing to solidify her place in the family, and erase the growing doubts in her current future. Instead in being rescued for a second time by this hero, she impulsive asked to join in his crusade.
She would be refused. But, in her persistence, this hero eventually came to acknowledge her efforts, and would at least train her on the side to become a heroine in her own right. Unfortunately, and to some extent inevitably, her family learned of this bond, and forced a choice: save her own skin, or betray this hero. She chose her own, dooming the hero, and forevermore regretted the decision. Despite it all, as the hero lay dying, he imparted one final lesson -- one final truth, as well as forgiveness.
For previous actions, her ties to the family were cut. But by then, they no longer mattered to her. Only the new name she took for herself, and the need to make amends. Though to do that and survive, Redemption left for Daggerford, hoping as much to do good deeds in a place less corrupt as Baldur's Gate. As well as to seek out potential allies, and reinforce her resolve through the many tests the adventuring life would set against her.

Name: Aleric "Farmer" Brown
Race: Variant Human
Class: Fighter
Background: Folk Hero
Backstory: Aleric is from a long line of low class farmers and craftsman. From a young age he worked the land with his father, grandfather and his fiv siblings. Due to their poor lot in life, Aleric had to learn to do a lot of the work most would pay others to do himself or with the help of his family or the other families that his village consisted of.
Once he was old enough to learn how to handle a weapon the young man was trained in basic martial combat in order to serve the in the local militia or if the kingdoms military is drafting soldiers. While he was given the old family armor, Aleric was never able to fight with a normal weapon so he learned to use a Pitch Fork as both a makeshift trident, this being his favored weapon to this day.
Upon coming of age, Aleric decided that he was going to do more then being a farmer and set out from his small village with the hope of gathering wealth so that he could raise his family from their lot as peasants. With a small sack of gold that he had earned from various work around his village he set out to travel. Along the way he made a small name for himself amongst the common room by dealing with with small creatures that bothered them such as wild animals and the like. Eventually he ended up in Daggerford looking for work.
Just to ask want him to use a Pitch Fork as his weapon so in his sheet I renamed his trident as that. Is that ok and if so would it be possible since it is a longer weapon to pair it with Polearm Master as a feat? If not then I will probably just go with Tough to give him more Hp
Backstory: Once a daughter of a simple woodcutter by trade in a simple village north of Beregost, she and her family worked the edges of the Cloak Wood. One morning a panicked looking nobleman stopped at their door claiming to be under pursuit and asked them to hide him. They hid him under the floorboards of the home, and he seemingly fell asleep there of exhaustion. But when he rose from his hiding place that evening, there was no questioning his nature. He murdered and tortured her family in front of her, feasting on their blood....her he toyed with through the night making her play with her families corpses and raking her tiny body with his claws.
But Sin did not break, she did not collapse....she got angry...and when he turned away to feast on her infant brother she swept a large jar of her fathers pine oil into the fire, the resulting conflagaration set Sin, the vampire and the house ablaze. She was found buried beneath the charred bodies of family once the fire was out, scarred but not crying.
Sin buried her family and swore an oath to avenge them, she knows not if the creature survived but she intends to make sure that any more of its kind do not.....
Backstory: Father Cadfrey, a simple priest, spent the better portion of his young life within the confines of Candlekeep, studying and postulating many things but, the one thing he always felt he had been missing was True Experience. He found he had a desire to experience the wonders of the world first hand. So, with a prayer to Mystra and pestering the heads of the order enough, Cadfrey was granted a minor research grant to study in a subject of his choosing, in the field. Excited Father Cadfrey has gathered his things, armed with quill, ink and journal he has set out for the world in search of adventure.

Name Sayre Caelano
Race: Fallen Aasimar/Variant human
Class: Ranger or light cleric depending on party needs
Backstory: Think Trevor Belmont from Castlevania but a woman and not a feckless drunk. From a family of monster hunters trying to make a name for herself and prove she's worthy after her family's fall from grace.
Gildar was part of a mercenary group in the underdark known as the Brotherhood of Slate. They took on any task, regardless of how mundane or violent it would be. Escorting folks through the underdark's twisting tunnels safely, up to political assassinations. One day, in the midst of a demonic uprising where the demon princes were tearing their way about his realm, a group of adventurers were in need of aid. And they had enough in gold and worthwhile loot to pay for half the company - It seemed they had recently escaped the clutches of the drow and were looking for the fastest way out, seeking aid in expediting that process.
Gildars' entire company was hired that day. It was the gravest mistake they had ever made. Eventually the group stumbled upon a lone drow priestess blocking their path. Her might was beyond reckoning, and everyone was slaughtered or enslaved. Gildar himself had been left for dead. But the drows spite knew no bounds - as just in case the priestess cursed all the bodies that lay there. All of their forms twisting into monstrosities. Gildar, remaining conscious if just barely.. having never held any faith in his life, called out to every patron and divine at once, promising to follow in proper service, should he be allowed to exact his revenge. Pelor answered.
Pelor shielded Gildar from the notice of the beasts who used to be his kin, and made him leave the underworld, to walk the surface as Gildars quarry had done just that herself. In return, Gildar was to promote Pelors' domain, and aid those who were weak, and in need as recompense. Gildar, once a fine warrior, still had suffered the effects of the curse. it weakened his body (so as to explain why he is level 1~) and using this new start to grow in power for the divine that had saved him.
(My friend Mehmen told me about this, so I would like to play with him if either of us are chosen! I also love no-boundary DM's. Who actually explore the world of DND as the gruesome place that it is instead of pretending bad things dont happen, and challenge me I've only found one DM who can offer that so far until now)
Class: Fighter, planning to multi-class into Divine Soul Sorcerer if possible.
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Background:
Krystal was found as a baby by a poor, widowed farmer. He worked hard until the age of thirteen, where, with his fathers blessing, left home to train as a fighter in an adventure guild in a bigger town. At the age of eighteen, he was known around guild as a thin but strong human, his Aasimar lineage unknown. When he returned home, however, he learned that the village was burned down in an attack. Many people were killed, including his adopted father. He had set off to find out who had taken everything from him for three years.
Background: Elga grew up in a small village near Daggerford. All her life she heard voices no one else had heard. One day her village was under attack by some bandits. As Elga watched her father get cut down, the voices grew louder. And promised her the ability to protect herself. She agreed without hesitation, and released powers she had never seen before. The bandits were slaughtered... but the powers didn't stop there. Everyone Elga knew was killed that day. She has spent her time since then learning to control these powers, hoping innocents won't pay the price for her mistakes.
'bout a year ago one of his cousins challenged to a swimming race after sundown in the lake. Ya, that's right - Blacklake, Waterdeep. The lake to which even Luskan mothers threaten to send their misbehaving littles. It's a race he swims every night, and it always ends the same -> with his cousin screea- It's a good thing Sergeant Knox believed his story and was able to get him employment as a caravan guard on the regular run to Baldur's Gate.

Race/class: Variant Human, Paladin
Backstory:
Mara Trieste and her family lived and tended to an old temple of Chauntea near the Ardeep forest, along with several other families. Mara, her cleric husband, and their 3 children lived modestly, working the land responsibly and eschewing city life and its attendant ugliness and corruption in favour of devotion to Chauntea.
It all came crashing down one night when members of an necromantic order came to call at his temple. They asked for allegiance to a thing called 'Vecna.' They asked to allow their dirty and unnatural beasts safe passage through the forests. They asked to chop timber for their war machines. They asked...for everything. We we defiant and refused their "offer." The first wave of orcs came in the early morning hours, crashing down on the temple like a wave upon the shore. It didn't last long. In the end, Mara and her husband were trapped, backs to the Dessarin and in front, bodies of their friends littered around the field. With a nod to his wife, Mara's husband pulled out hemlock sprigs and gave them to their children before taking one himself. As their slumping bodies fell to the ground, Mara pulls out her scimitar, offered a prayer to Chauntea, and began to charge. However, a robed figure came forward and motioned with his hands. A wall of force crashed into Mara, flinging her into the river. She surfaced 15 feet away and observed the robed figure making mystical passes in the air as the group of orcs backed up. To her horror, Mara saw some of the figures start moving - her friend Tighe and his wife, the blacksmith - and finally her own husband and kids began to squirm, fingers clenching, a horrible wailing arising from the bodies..."Chauntea no!" Mara screamed as darkness overtook her, the effects of the spell finally causing her to lose consciousness and float down the river.
Awakening on the banks of the Dessarin near Nightstone, Mara treks back to her temple and finds it razed to the ground. More troubling is the absence of bodies, and though there were some tracks to follow, they eventually just vanished. She vowed that day to destroy all undead and orcs, and has a deep hatred of those practicing the necromantic arts. She will stop at nothing to destroy them and still believes she can save her family, though she has been weeks on the road, traveling the HIgh Road towards Daggerford in search of more information of any strange cults in the area, or tales of cultists raising undead.

Ability scores: 11 14 14 12 14 14
Character Name: Lorian Vallon
Race/Class: High Elf Wizard
Background: Hermit
Backstory:

Sometimes a Nat 1 tells a better story than a Nat 20 ever could.
Character: Gildar Slate-Mantle
Stats: Ability scores: 6 9 17 10 15 10
Race: Gray Dwarf
Class: Life-Cleric
Alignment: True-Neutral
Background:

Submitted for your perusal - Vanotur, half orc caravan guard from Blacklake, Waterdeep.
https://ddb.ac/characters/22210684/kydRks
'bout a year ago one of his cousins challenged to a swimming race after sundown in the lake. Ya, that's right - Blacklake, Waterdeep. The lake to which even Luskan mothers threaten to send their misbehaving littles. It's a race he swims every night, and it always ends the same -> with his cousin screea-
It's a good thing Sergeant Knox believed his story and was able to get him employment as a caravan guard on the regular run to Baldur's Gate.
Cool! Never done CoS and really new to PbP and D&D for only a couple of months.
Character name: Mara Trieste
Character sheet: https://ddb.ac/characters/16325930/QIdIJn
Ability scores: 15 15 15 11 16 16 (I'll post character sheet after I post the rolls)
