(OOC: So, I've recently supported the Hellboy for 5e kickstarter and I'm interested in running a game in this universe.)
If you would like to join the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) and begin investigating occult perils that threaten the world's very existence, then place your application for the Bureau here. Preferred applicants will: - Have some familiarity with the occult or paranormal (OOC: You don't have to be incredibly knowledgeable about the world of Hellboy--I'm certainly no expert--but at least have some familiarity with it, even just having seen the movies would probably be sufficient). - Be highly motivated self-starters(OOC: Be willing to post 3-5 times/week, doesn't have to be every day, but the more consistent the better) - Be flexible and able to handle changing situations fluidly
In your application, please include your resume (preferred character race/type--you can use pretty much any race, but all but if you're not human, please explain how you've come to be in touch with the mortal realm and why you're interested in joining the B.P.R.D.),and a brief cover letter(backstory).
I'm pretty open to either of those. I don't have the final book yet, just the "quick start" guide, but I believe Hellboy himself is a unique creature or actual demon/devil. While Abe is probably a reskinned aquatic elf.
Hi i just wanted to throw my hat in the ring to join.
I am a huge fan of both pulp and paranormal fiction. I have a decent collection of the comic and the movies.
I can and will post frequently. and as a PbP DM myself I'm adaptable to changes.
Character-wise I am thinking of -
Emiliano "Kiko" Valentin a current Private investigator, he was a former police detective and a , veteran Army Military Intelligence officer. He was also an Olympic boxing hopeful in college.
While investigating a series of kidnappings he was led to a cult which in turn led to a supernatural encounter. despite his experience and training, it was actually his faith and cultural upbringing that allowed him to recognise what he was facing and survive. soon after he was contacted.
I’m not familiar with the comics, but I’ve seen the movies, and the general idea of hellboy stories. I dig it.
Im good for at least a post a day, more sometimes if there’s more activity.
I’d like to play as a psychic. Human. My character is sensitive to the impressions left on the things of this world by the heavy emotions of people, and simple existence of the Other. When he found there was something he could do about it, he leapt at the chance. He’s occasionally let his powers be used for less altruistic purposes of the bprd, trusting that it didn’t matter so long as they still fought evil. He grew up in a family where mental illness was believed common. His mother supposedly killed herself, but he’s convinced she was attacked by a supernatural entity. He seems well adjusted now, but he’s certainly driven. His only hangups are the family members who survived, and especially his father who never could explain what happened back then. (Yes, I’m ripping off the Haunting of Hill House a bit, but it’s a good trope)
I'm interested in this, if you are still recruiting. I have not read the comics but have seen the films. Though if anyone has any good arcs, I'm willing to do some reading, especially if its an arc from the last 20 years or so.
I don't know what any character rules for this are. But I want to play as a human with some level of combat, maybe some sort of powers.

“The secret we should never let the gamemasters know is that they don't need any rules.” ― Gary Gygax
I am relatively familiar with the Hellboy setting through movies and a few comics, so very interested.
For a character I was thinking an Italian Catholic Priest who acts as an exorcist for the church. He crossed paths with the BPRD on his last job with a poltergeist and was interested in joining seeing that their methods were far more effective.
Definitely still recruiting. Character rules are basically the same as normal, and then just reflavoring things--e.g., replacing a breastplate with a bullet proof vest, replacing crossbows with rifles, etc.
So mechanically the character would be no different than any other 5e character, then we'll just figure out how to "modernize" it.
I have not read or seen Hellboy, but I have read up on the lore enough that I feel familiar with it.
I can definitely make about a post or two a day most days, depending on how active everyone else is.
Also, a few clarifying questions, what level are we starting at, and how are we doing stats?
Character-wise, I would like to try out an idea of Doom Slayer incorporated into D&D, and I think the Hellboy theme would be a good happy medium between the two. Human, probably variant to get either the Firearm Specialist or Sharpshooter feat, going straight Gifted Human origin. Gunslinger obviously (may eventually multiclass into Vengeance Paladin). I will also be changing up a few things from the lore of the Doom Slayer to fit his backstory in more with Hellboy.
Flynn Taggart was a Marine who retired after he suffered a wound when his vehicle ran over a land mine on patrol. After his discharge, he began suffering from PTSD, and his dreams became filled with the horrors of Hell, and he yearned to slay the demons he would see every night. So Flynn began taking up advanced weapon and combat tactics courses, specializing in machine guns, but branching out to other forms of weapons as well. He discovered that he was having a combination of lucid dreams and a vision of reality, so he began unleashing carnage on the demons. However, even outside of his dreams, he had developed a violent nature, earning him the nickname "Slayer." Joining the BPRD on behalf of his exceptional gun skills, Flynn aimed to one day slay the demons that tormented him to vanquish his unending hatred. Although he tried to attack Hellboy when they first met, he soon learned to trust the half-demon when it was discovered they had similar intentions. Flynn has to start small, taking on minor jobs, but he knows that he will eventually rise up through the ranks of the BPRD and get to destroy those paranormal creatures who have made his life a living hell.
This seems fun, but I'm going to drop out. Best of luck adventurers!

A Kickstarter for reflavoring the same classes etc? I thought it looked like there would be new stuff
Well, there are new things, especially backgrounds and new mechanics, but the final book isn't out yet, only the quick start. So for now at least, I'm just gonna use the same rules.
What's the deadline for submitting characters, do we use point buy or roll and are there any (hard) limits you can say beforehand that you prefer not to see?
I'd love to play. Human with an archaeologist background. Maybe 1920s-ish, kinda cliche, opened a tomb now haunted by the thing my team release upon the world kind of thing OR a monster Hunter magic-type.

Then I would like to play as Charles Mayer, a human and a former FBI agent. Mechanically he will start off as a Rogue with a Criminal/Spy background. He prefers to use pistols, which I would like to mechanically use as crossbows.
Charles Mayer was a well-trained agent for the FBI. He trained to be a field agent and quickly became proficient in entering buildings without being seen and without making a noise. He is naturally athletic and acrobatic which has helped him infiltrate many buildings and hideouts. He is an expert with a pistol and has experience with gather intelligence. Unfortunately, he is not great with people. Though he has a knack for detecting when people are lying to him.
Which is why he worked with a partner, a friend, a loved one, and later a wife. Whilst Charles lacked in persuasion and intimidation, his partner more than made up for it. She was seductive and at times could be downright frightening.
The two worked together well, but Charles had a habit of being rash. Forgetting plans or otherwise ignoring them. Eventually, during a mission, Charles went off script and the cost was his wife's life.
Charles has a guilty pleasure for deflating the egos of others. He likes to show off and prove that he is the better agent.
His adversary is the master spy of a foreign intelligence agency that killed his wife.
He also has a benefactor in a rich and powerful man who has often provided Charles with places to hide out, as well as safe passage.
To answer questions: - Will probably start around 3rd or 4th level. -Stats will use either standard array or point buy -I'll be closing recruitment in a day or so. -For "hard limits," anything that isn't officially published material will need approval first (e.g., Rick & Morty, Acq Inc, Critical Role, etc.) -For "stuff that I'd prefer not to see," I don't mind most of the mechanical things. But roleplaying-wise, I would prefer to avoid the most problematic cliches, such as edgy loners, non-team players, etc. -As an aside, I have no interest in any kind of romance, but I'm not opposed to it. However, I don't want any graphic depictions of sex or sexual content. And any kind of nonconsensual sexual content--physical, mental, psychic, etc.--is right out. -This will be set in the modern era. (Despite this, I'd rather avoid modern politics).

Alright, I assume you probably want our character sheets, so here you go. I might need to finalize a few more things, but this should do for now. https://ddb.ac/characters/38841630/Yqi9Dr
Race: Dragonborn, re flavored as a gargoyle brought to life
Class: Sorcerer -celestial or warlock-celestial
Rook is a strange and misunderstood creature. Originally, he was a lifeless statue upon the walls of the great Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. A grotesques that adorned it's wall for over two centuries. That was until an unexpected fire struck the great structure. The heat from the flames, the screams of the innocent, the potential loss of precious life, history, and holy relics cried out to him and somehow, he moved. That night he tirelessly moved among the flames, saved what he could from the blaze and returned to his resting spot. However, he could not sleep, his stone slumber did not return, nor did the light within fade. Longing for purpose, he turned to what he knew best. The church and it's teachings, he had heard them day in and day out for multiple life times. Eventually, he made his way to Rome. While he longed to be an ordained priest, they thought his gifts lent more to the protection of the faithful than to teaching and that later lead to a possible transfer to the BPRD.
While this could lend easily to a cleric type role. I thought more inborn magic such as the celestial patron for the warlock. In that case I'd likely take the pact of the tomb at 3rd level and have it be a "holy" book.

This seems interesting. Would Hellboy be a tiefling, and Abe be an Aquatic Elf? Lol.
Would you allow CR content? For example, the Gunslinger Fighter or Blood Hunter? I think playing one of those would be interesting in this setting.
