We recently did a one shot where I chose a ranger (Hunter) starting at lvl 5. I was dishing out an enormous amount of damage that's in my opinion quite questionable. My character choices were:
Dex: 20 (+5) - good roll Attack roll: +10 Weapon: longbow (1d8+5) Fighting Style: archery Hunters Prey: colossus slayer Feat: sharpshooter Class feature: Extra Attack
So. First attack using sharpshooter and hunters mark would be :: hit: +5, damage = (1d8+5)+10+(1d6) Second attack using sharpshooter hunters mark, and colossus slayer would be :: hit +5, damage. (1d8+5)+10+(1d6)+(1d8)
That's 35 - 66 damage on one turn, at level 5. that's insane!
Lots of builds can do this....fighters get lots of feat options and by 6th level could add hunters mark using he same basic build as above. A figher build with action surge would out damage for one turn....
That -CAN- be overpowered depending on rolls, but with the -5 to hit it depends on how much you can punch out if if you can always maintain Advantage. If you wanted an actual decently OP build for it, make sure the Ranger is a Gloomstalker. Dread Ambusher combines insanely nicely with Umbral Darkness if youre fighting in complete dark, pretty much always giving you advantage even on monsters that have darkvision. Extra attack is nice at 5 but if you can hold out until level 11 (Honestly its pretty slim picking in the middle, this class is very front heavy) then Stalker's Flurry will turn you into a windmill of death (At 11th level, you learn to attack with such unexpected speed that you can turn a miss into another strike. Once on each of your turns when you miss with a weapon attack, you can make another weapon attack as part of the same action.) While the tradeoof early on can really make it so you miss some attacks, Being a Gloomstalker and holding out until you have Stalker's Flurry combined with Dread Ambusher (and if you can get Action Surge from Fighter, its gg), and you'll make it so within the first round of combat you'll put out such explosive amounts of damage if you land hits consistently that the rest of your party basically becomes a cleanup crew. That aside:
Sharpshooter is generally a net loss unless you have advantage on your attack rolls.
^ this is very true. Unless you can guarantee consistency... while the damage is nice, you run the risk of eventually having a fight where you're missing a hell of a lot more than hitting, and depending on what that fight is it could spell disaster for you. If you can stack the deck in your favor, you'll become a monster.
The Ranger can never fall into the category of "overpowered." Damage is only one factor in a character's power level and many builds can achieve similar DPR without sacrificing versatility.

is that right?
That is right. You are sacrificing +5 to hit for some of that damage however and if the target has a decent AC you might miss.
