A party member who is a Ranger and presumably a Hunter as he has used Horde Breaker did 103 damage in a single turn and I don't want to be rude and ask him directly how that works so I was hoping someone would have an idea. Hes a level 11 Ranger (no multi-class that I know of) and a Goblin. His character is AL legal and would only have a short bow +1.
He hit an undead creature but I don't think that would have any effect. Looking in the PHB I can't see how he would do so much damage in a single turn, even with 3 attacks. He didn't state he was doing anything special such as casting spells but he may have and the DM may have taken it for granted as the player isn't the most focused person.
The only other thing that I can think of is that he took a bunch of curses from hags in Curse of Strahd but I don't know their effects.
By comparison my Paladin did 50 damage with 3x attacks with divine smite the round before - although that seems poor considering I did 47 damage on a single opportunity attack earlier.
huntwrs mark used? That’s an extra 3d6 (more if there was a crit)
Is it the normal ranger or revised one where favored enemy has more benefit than before?
theres a lot of details missing to figure it out. But right now it’s within realm of normal.
dex of 19 and sharpshooter alone counts for 42 damage.
the +1 shortbow pushes that to 45.
and that’s before the 6d6 if using hunters Mark.
which already could be as much as 81 with no crits. And no other bonuses. And not factoring in any curses.
if he’s the revised ranger. He’s get an extra +2 vs favored enemies (Undead). So 87 max. No crits.
How did your paladin get 3 attacks in 1 round?
and did you divine smite on all 3 or only on 1?
what level spell slots did you burn for divine smite?
Just burning the level 1 slots on all 3 attacks. Would be 9d8 plus your weapon right there. Which on average is 41.5 damage even before adding in your weapons damage.
another thing to consider. What damage type do you do? Some undead have damage resistances and damage vulnerabilities.
its possible that the undead were vulnerable to piercing, piercing damage deals 2x as much, and resistant to slashing or bludgeoning, so your damage from that got reduced.
essentially what I am getting at: there’s A LOT of things that could have possibly happened before the cheating.... and not enough details were given for it to be clear that they cheated.
it might have even been possible for the ranger to deal over 200 damage in the round if the stars and dice aligned properly against a good vulnerability.
Thanks for the response. Normal Ranger due to it being AL as far as I'm aware. Yes, he probably did Hunter's Mark the enemy and may have Sharpshooter. Even he's said Ranger is underpowered but clearly can do massive damage in the right situation.
Paladin was hasted and used 3 x 1st level spells (I got charmed earlier due to terrible rolls, even as a half-elf and was forced to use up my remaining 2nd level spells slot (Paladin 6 / Rogue 4) against an ally, who then got charmed and did 43 damage with inflict wounds on me) so yes 9d8 radiant plus 3d8+12 weapon damage. Was versus Strahd so while he was in Sunlight (Icon of Ravenkind) he doesn't have vulnerability to Radiant as far as I'm aware.
Ranger is not underpowered. Ranger has trap options that can make them feel underpowered, partciularly beastmasters. Even beastmasters can be good if the optimal animal companions are chosen and proper tactics used.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Sharpshooter used? That’s be an extra 30 damage.
any crits? That would double dice
