Well, my party found the toboggan in Icespire Hold. I assume they are going to assemble and attempt to ride it out of there. Any mechanic out there for me to use or leverage? Ideas for one!
You can have proficiency in vehicles: land. I’d go with a dex check to steer it, and let them add proficiency bonus if they have the vehicle proficiency.
What I ended up doing was to quickly sketch out a bobsled run, and assign a DC to each turn. I then allowed the group to assign one person INT checks to memorize each the turns in the 1st half of the run (all they could see from the start). If they passed the DC for a turn, they successfully communicated that information to the driver and brake operator. If they failed the DC for a turn, I granted a perception check against the DC of the turn to both of those characters to be able to tell if they could trust the memorization of that turn. Passing that DC meant the could see the actual turn in time to react. Failing meant they trusted the inaccurate info and the result was dependent on how much they missed the DC by. I had driver and brakes each roll athletics against the DC of the turn to see if they could pull off the quick reaction needed to make the turn when they were expecting something different.
Successfully memorized turns just required a DEX check against DC of the turn for the driver and STR against it for the brake operator.
Turns in the unknown half of the run were treated as incorrectly memorized turns, requiring the Perception and Athletics checks against the DC of the turn for reaction, followed by the normal DEX and STR to execute it.
For crashes and missed turns, I rolled a number of d6’s I felt was appropriate for bludgeoning damage for the mishap, assigning the damage to all in the sled.
In the end every one of us was laughing so hard we could barely breathe.
When they crashed at the end, my Druid had the presence of mind to ask one of the fighters “Are ya dead?”...to which they replied, “No, mon”...and everyone nearly fell off their chairs laughing.
