Sorry, new edition question. Do characters always get the equipment listed for their class as bonus equipment or is that just for quick-start design characters.
Ah ha! Found it. p.143. Every edition seems to have a different take on some of these subtlties but I like the quick build option.
"Starting Equipment
When you create your character, you receive equipment based on a combination o f your class and background. Alternatively, you can start with a number o f gold pieces based on your class and spend them on items from the lists in this chapter. See the Starting Wealth by Class table to determine how much gold you have to spend."

D&D Beyond FoundersYou can choose the starting equipment OR roll gold and use the gold to purchase equipment.
