I am running a game here on DBB as a PBP game, and recently, we hit level 6. One of my players is a Circle of the Stars druid, and gained the feature: Cosmic Omen, which reads:
Whenever you finish a long rest, you can consult your Star Map for omens. When you do so, roll a die. Until you finish your next long rest, you gain access to a special reaction based on whether you rolled an even or an odd number on the die:
Weal (even). Whenever a creature you can see within 30 feet of you is about to make an attack roll, a saving throw, or an ability check, you can use your reactionto roll a d6 and add the number rolled to the total.
Woe (odd). Whenever a creature you can see within 30 feet of you is about to make an attack roll, a saving throw, or an ability check, you can use your reaction to roll a d6 and subtract the number rolled from the total.
You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Now, since the game is on PBP, it is very hard to do Reactions for a number of reasons, since we are not at a table in real time responding to one another
And so, I turn to you, DBB community to ask you a question:
How would you change or implement this feature so my player can still use it without it being a hasale for the whole group? I'm open to homebrew ideas, or anything really
Conditional statements can be helpful in those cases with pre-rolling reactions. Or stating the intent and being okay with another rolling it.
That won't solve every case. But can help to have some of those "I know this monster is going to make an attack. So get ready to subtract my cosmic die."
But allowing to be used after the roll is seen is probably going to be easier for things. Paired with pre-stating in other situations. Strengthens it a bit since you won't waste it on situations where it wouldn't help. So you might adjust the number of uses if you find it to be an issue. But shouldn't be too bad I think.
Main issue will be possible needs for retcons on things done thinking something failed/succeeded when it didn't, but that's something you're dealing with via shield, counterspell, etc.
