In the campaign I'm running guns are a fairly new concept, would it be possible to enchant an item, like a bullet, with an unstable fireball that explodes on impact/misfire. If this is possible what schools of magic would it give off (for detect magic) I'm think a mix transmutation/abjuration?
I'm not sure the rules for enchanting ammo, but I'd treat bullets the same as arrows. As far as school id go with evocation since that's the effect on hit
Yes, you could do it, and the school would be transmutation.

It seems like what you're looking for is sort of like - but not exactly - glyph of warding. (It's not exactly that because glyph of warding specifies that you can't move the glyph without breaking the spell, and that the target of the glyph has to be a surface or an object that can be closed. You'd have to houserule it to let it be cast on a bullet, and houserule it so that it stays even if the bullet is transported. But otherwise, it's pretty close to the effect you're looking for, assuming "when the bullet hits" is the trigger for the stored fireball.)
Magic items don’t actually give off an aura of any spell school. If you want to actually cast a specific spell on a bullet or what have you, it’ll radiate the school of that spell. But if it’s a magic item, it only radiates an aura of generic magic.

Thanks guys! Just wanted to make sure with others before I break any laws of magic ;)
