I'm running a campaign and I want the party to be trailed by a night hag. I'm just wondering how they work are they able to track the party physically on the prime material plane or can they track them through the ether. My main hope is to corrupt the party and slowly drain them..... Party is level 6 I'm also open to ideas on how they can deal with it.
Well, if she is personally stalking the players, her heartstone is enough for that task. But I do have a lack of context; is the Night Hag a major opponent, or just an encounter or two?
The heartstone is fine for the later, but if it is former and she is working more behind the scenes, consider the following:
She could have a magic device or ritual to scry on them.
She has a familiar (quasit, imp, homunculus etc) that spies on them.
An item the players carry allows her to spy on them.
She interrogates them with a Dream spell every night or so.
Per Volo's, hags have access to "Weird Magic." so you don't need much in the way of logic to explain it; she just does. It all depends on how easy it is to detect it, and what will they do when / if they do?
You could have the hag collect a piece of hair, or fingernail from a player, then put it in a cauldron along with a compass, some magic item, and a bunch of salamander eyes, and then it makes a compass that always lets her find where the players are or something.
