Upon reading the entry about the personality of the Warforged I was intrigued by the last phrase:
The more a warforged develops its individuality, the more likely it is to modify its body, seeking out an artificer to customize the look of its face, limbs, and plating.
Can Warforged who is skilled in several crafts* modify his/her own body and what are the limitations? I guess you can't completely replace the wooden parts as they pretty much are the flesh, bones and muscles of a Warforged, but can you remove all the metal platings, including the face or simply modify and add on them?
My Warforged has a desire to customize himself to match his perception of beauty (including modifying his entire head to make it look like a featureless stylized rendition of a Tiefling's head). Generally speaking he wants to look sleek and shiny to an extreme extent.
*Currently he is Level 5 with 2 in Artificer, 2 in War Magic Wizard (because he is a WARforged) & 1 in Forge Domain Cleric (because he is WarFORGED) and has proficiency in 6 artisan's tools (Glassblower's, Jeweler's, Leatherworker's, Painter's, Smith's & Tinker's).
Well he's an artificer, and he has proficiency in Smith's tools. In XGtE it says "Smith's tools allow you to work metal, beating it to alter its shape, repair damage, or work raw ingots into useful items." So I'd say yes.

As long as it is only cosmetic, I say go nuts. Just ask your DM.
The question is...if you can permanently and significantly alter your appearance, is it still only cosmetic as you could pass as a different person?
Think of it like plastic surgery. It's time consuming and painful, but you look different afterwards. Also the more times you do it the worse it looks. If you want a quick change to look like someone else you would use a disguise kit.
This is true for purely natural lifeforms, not artificial ones. Also to completely change the material of your "skin", the very shape of one's skull, etc. aren't things that falls under plastic surgery. And the uncanny valley that comes into effect upon extensive plastic surgery is also not applicable, as Warforged are not looking like humans (or other races) unless one tries to get closer to them with ones own alterations.
I'd say you'd have to have a detailed list of your character's appearance and anatomy:
How much does their breastplate weigh? Is it bullet proof? Magic in any way? What about your eyes? Heterochromic with one eye with dark visioned and the other seeing the ethereal plane? What are your legs? Are you even bipedal or are you running around as a motorcycle centaur going at high speeds?
As long as you're keeping track of your character's changes and the applications be they cosmetic or functional.
I still think WOTC need to better address the issue of customized prosthesis. But I guess it's an issue people are still trying to handle without letting it be too much trouble.
i think another interesting thing to consider is exactly what tools are required. its vague because a lot of war forged are differed. not all warforged are made of metal. some are made of stone. and if that can be a thing then so can many other material choices. what's your warforged made of? do the wooden parts comprise the base structure of the body? if so then smith tools might not be enough, you might need herbalism too, or even alchemy. (not very hard to do with an artificer, since they have tool proficiency out the wazoo.) what kind of material is he looking to modify himself with, steel? or maybe marble? that's masonry tools right their. i think one of the most important things to consider here is how much can a warforged modify themselves. while their are clear differences i'd definitely draw a comparison to trying to operation on yourself. you need the right tools, and the constitution to do it, but even then their are soem things you can't do by yourself. modifying you own head would be nearly impossible. so he'd likely need an assistant, preferably another artificer. i do like the idea of warforged modifying themselves, and its even supported to an extent with artificers being able to make the armblade magic items as infusions (something normally only warforged can attune to due to their nature.) i'd allow it, within reason. and even if it has some practical benefit, as long as you put in the leg work i think it would be fine (buying or attaining the materials for example)
