Disclaimer: What follows is a rough build of a character I want to play at some point but likely won't as I DM more often than not, so if you like what you see, feel free to play it and tweak it. A few things to bear in mind: 1) I don't tend to build up my characters in a min/max sense so you won't see many ability scores maxed out. 2) I use the standard array to generate ability cores, this is mostly just for ease of reference when mulling over a build. 3) There may be some homebrew material mentioned so if you play adventurers league then this may not be a legal build. 4) I've a back catalogue of these so I'll post them as and when i cobble my notes into something that makes sense. 5) I won't be referencing many optional things from Tasha's Cauldron of Whatnot. 6) As always, feel free to post any questions, comments, feedback or general berating of my errors in rules or how abilities work.
This one is a very open one that I can never decide which way it should be taken.
Right, now that's out the way, lets move on to...…
Name: The Wardancer
Basic Info:
Race: Elf (But I could not decide which variety hence the various differnt stats below).
Ability Scores (including racial bonuses): High Elf: Str 14, Dex 14, Con 15, Int 14, Wis 10, Cha 8 Wood Elf: Str 14, Dex 14, Con 15, Int 13, Wis 11, Cha 8 Drow or Eladrin: Str 14, Dex 14, Con 15, Int 13, Wis 10, Cha 9 Sea Elf: Str 14, Dex 14, Con 16, Int 13, Wis 10, Cha 8
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral.
Background: Sage (Failed Wizard).
Class: Barbarian (Again, I could not decide which type but could work with any variety).
Feats: Any depending on preferred weapon.
Bio:
The Wardancer had another name once. Once the Wardancer was a Wizard and a promising one at that but then came the day of Choosing. The day when a Wizard choose their specialism. The Wardancer had wanted to join a group called something like the Singing Blades, its memories were not quite right since that day. It recalled flourishing a blade and singing as part of some ritual but then the magic took over and now there was only the War Dance.
Building and reasoning:
The basis for this one is an Elf that was due to become a Bladesinger Wizard but they failed to hold the blade song and the magic twisted their mind. Effectively they went from being a level 2 Wizard to having no character class and they retrained themselves to be a Wardancer which we'll treat as a Barbarian. Rages are referred to as 'The War Dance'. Despite reference to memories not being quite right this is not a build for a big dumb barbarian, there is still intelligence but just not what it once was.
Right onto the build:
The build will largely depend on whether to multiclass at any point. The Intellegence score is high enough to allow a multiclass back into Wizard if needed but otherwise going strictly single classed Barbarian is viable. ASI/Feat selection will depend on whehter to make use of the Unarmoured Defense ability or whether we decide to use armour.
Equipment:
For starting equipment at level 1, in addition to the equipment gained from the Sage Background, we'll be taking an Explorer's Pack, 4 Javelins, 2 Hand Axes and whatever Martial Melee Weapon would crossover with the training we had when we tried to become a Bladesinger. The first couple of levels might be a bit hard as we're on AC14 so we'd need to be looking out for armour, ideally a Breast Plate or Half Plate Armour.
