So long story short, I have a character idea I want to flesh out. However, I just can't decide on what class the character would be and it's driving me crazy.
Character Idea: A human who is sort of the "royal pet" of the ruling 4 person family of a small elf kingdom. The human is basically your average normal person most likely...17 years of age. The royal family are loving and caring, and the kingdom, being comprised of elves, has a strong presence of magic. There are no other humans in this place and it's also most likely not too close to any other kingdom discounting small settlements and single houses.
This is pretty much what I have so far for the idea till I got stuck on the class choice. So can ya'll help me decide on what it should be?
Note: I'm going to go ahead and say that Firstly, I am not concerned by optimization or numbers. And Secondly, I am not concerned by realism or hyper realism of a setting or kingdoms in general or the circumstance of elves or of humans etc. you get the idea. This is just so the conversation doesn't dissolve into number crunching or debating over how realistic this should be. Let's just have fun brainstorming an idea : )
Oh and to make it easier we can refer to the human character as "Pet" I hadn't thought of an actual name for them.
Not quite sure what you're meaning by "Royal Pet", but if they're in an elven kingdom with high magical presence there are some ideas that come to mind that could bring up some interesting further questions about their upbringing, living situation, and reason for being there that you could talk with your DM about to potentially create some interesting hooks for the story later down the road.
Perhaps they're a Sorcerer with magical powers that come from their very being as opposed to a powerful entity or years of meticulous study. Perhaps part of the reason they're being kept by the family is to be used as a research subject so they can learn more about where their magical gifts come from. Maybe they are or were being groomed to have their bloodline intermingled with the family to increase their own magical potency or something. Your character might know about this or they might not, and that could be something to talk with your DM about in the case that you choose this option, as it can bring about some very interesting reveals for you and the party to go through as you play.
Or maybe they've steadily been learning magic from somebody they're close with. Then you could have the character be a Wizard of sorts. This could also be a very interesting idea to explore if you decide to go with the Bladesinger Arcane Tradition at second level. Normally that particular tradition is restricted to Elves and Half-Elves, but seeing as your character has likely lived a great deal of their life in the good graces of this prominent elven family it doesn't seem like it would be unreasonable to go down that route. Be sure that you mention this idea to your GM first if you decide that going Bladesinger-Wizard would be a super neat idea though, because your character (being a human) wouldn't normally have access to that subclass.
Maybe they're in a kind of Theon-Grayjoy-esque situation where they're being kept by the elven family as an assurance of good faith that they won't be attacked/invaded by another rival noble family. Maybe they've been treated well by the elves that they've been staying with, but there's always been a sort of rift there and the family doesn't even really want to chance your character learning any kind of magic at all. In this case, Fighter or Rogue would also sound like reasonable choices. These can also be interesting options to go with because both of these classes have subclass options that are capable of learning magic in the case that your character has a bit of a drive to learn some spells themselves. Alternatively you could play them as the other nonmagical options when the time comes to pick a subclass just to further cement the contrast between your character and those that they grew up with. Either direction you go with can lead to amazing places story/development-wise.
Well what I meant by "Royal Pet" was maybe something along the lines of... Queen Elizabeth and her dogs sort of. Say a Human lived 100 years and elves lived 1000 years. That has a similar ratio between a person's live expectancy to their pet's in a perfect scenario. So the way you would treat the family dog well and that relationship is basically what I was imagining between the Human and their Elven caretakers.
I completely forgot that the Bladesinger archetype was an elf exclusive subclass and that might be exactly what I need ,and it fights perfectly with the magic side of things!
I guess try to imagine what his role was... maybe a Bard, if he was sort of an amusement, or novelty for them. If you want to go melee, College of Swords would work.
If he feels slighted, or maybe that he was kept away from people of his own kind, then maybe he goes Rogue, and Arcane Trickster. Or, if he feels alone, Ranger could work.
I would go with a Bard in this case. He is essentially the court jester. He has to keep everyone happy or entertained for his own welfare and benefit and he can pick up bits and pieces of magic "under the table" so o speak.
So after a bit of pondering and looking up some stuff I think I might go with 2 levels of Wizard Bladesinger and the rest in Bard College of Swords. I seem to remember that the two have some similarities, I think, but I'm okay with that.
Barbarian entertainer/gladiator background. The elves find his primitive ways amusing and brutality useful for pitting against other high families champions. He gets away with lude acts such as urinating in public and punching horses he doesn't like the look of. His bond is a caravan he lives in the royal keeps courtyard.

Maybe Cleric? Not sure why, though.
