Rather than borrow dozens of ideas from overused books/movies, I like to borrow character concepts/plot hooks/ideas from real life history, particularly American History. Now with that said, I've come up with an idea for a Colonial-esque setting that could be adapted to fit Faerun. Now I understand that Faerun is different entirely and would have need different reasons/motivations to colonize. After all, they can't even get from Phandelvar to Neverwinter without Goblins ambushing them.
With all that said, imagine a set of islands, each corresponding with a different Plane. This gives a serious amount of resources to potentially exploit. With such in mind, most land in the New World was claimed by the country of origin of the discoverer/the commissioning country. In this case, no one claimed it. (My idea for Faerun is that Jarlaxle's mercenary band discovered it, and are trading its location for prestige and power). And thus the rat race begins. The various countries around Faerun - and even some organizations (Dragons and their kobold minions, Beholders, Goblin Bands, Orc Raiders) began to attempt to snap up this powerful asset.
My only issue with this idea is that the ideology and mindset required for colonialism to work (the negative aspect of killing natives and taking their land) only seems to work with Drow (who aren't really interested in taking surface land, but are probably the most racist of all). It might work for dwarves and certain types of humans. Is there something I'm missing or would this not work as a setting idea? I think it'd be kind of fun (and intend to make this into a play-by-post story eventually). I don't want to be a lore-breaking monster (I'm very particular about that). Any thoughts/advice/help would be much appreciated.

Thank you for the advice/help in this setting. I appreciate it highly. And those ideas all have merit. I will attempt to spin some around.
