As in have been relearning the game. Came up with quest concept. What if the players had search out items to create homebrew magic items. E.I. Player had to retrieve a certain kind of sand from an abandoned city of the desesert. The sand is know as breathe of the scarab. A statue pours sand out the statues mouth only after party finds the key and/fit to make it work. The sand is needed to make A special flask for said potion.
A crazied alchemists needs years of the made dragon.
Just a few ideas I am spit balling to get better ideas.
Depending on the levels of the players, you could install a little trap in the statue: once it's poured the sand out of its mouth, it releases a Dao that had been imprisoned within it. The players would then have to either fight the Dao or somehow negotiate with it. It could also be revealed that the statue is an inactive Clay or Stone Golem, installed as a final countermeasure.
I am running a very similar quest for levels 1-6. The players have to gather a dragon claw, wererat head, and cockatrice beak for a wizard's potion. At the end the wizard makes the potion and becomes a lich! (But made with a modded drow mage stat block so they can actually fight it). I like what you're doing. For ingredients, make them far from the start (like you did in your example), and think about stories you can tell in the places the party will have to visit along the way -- maybe the abandoned city ruins in the desert are rife with bandits hoping to loot the old temples, or a group of cobra-like yuan-ti has made it's home there.
