You might not need to look thoroughly through the rules, if you can 100% complete the character beforehand it will save the DM a lot of time. As long as you can find a party with at least 1 person (prefferably the DM) being experienced, just play along and you should get the gist. I just watched the substantially more experienced players for my first real session, and I was able to pick it up pretty quick. My first character was a half orc rogue, NOTE: as long as another ally is in range of the enemy, you can apply your sneak attack. Knowing that means that you can get your sweet sweet extra d6 90% of the time.
PS my first campaign (where I played as a rogue) was Tomb of Annihilation -- most of it was combat heavy. If you are in a combat intensive game, consider switching to fighter
I think that you should look through the basic rules to get a sense of the game mechanics. However, the best way to get better at playing is simply through experience.
I learned how to play by listening/watching actual play streams/podcasts, and found it really helpful. A really entertaining one that also helped me understand the rules a lot better was Dimension 20. Their whole first season is on YouTube and it's so funny
i normally recommend just jumping in and reading the rules after session 1 or 2 as they'll make way more sense...but that's at a table where there's 5 other people to lean over and point to your sheet.
but without a real table, I'd read chapters 5,8,9 of the basic rules now - you'll find the rest interesting as you progress.
hey im a complete noob to DND and need a group to help me learn how to play. i have a dark elf rougue . i also have discord
Hi Elisi best way to start is to go onto roll twenty and see if you can join a game. you can search for games that welcome new players.

Look through the basic rules. Then you kinda know how to play, which means your group won't have to help as much.
