Im running a homebrew campaign, however im mainly a combat focused DM not much into RP. Two of my players were asking about a story plot involving the two of them. So a bit of backstory, we have a "wood"forged druid and a high elf wizard. The druid did something in his past, that was so bad to nature that he was turned into the "wood"forged. He has very little memories of this event. Hes also losing memories as time goes on. The wizard is multi classing into druid soon and has developed a good friendship with our party's main druid. Now she wants to help him get his body real back. I want to do something special for them and the whole party. I have a location in my campaign picked out already. I want to do some test that out druid has to pass to prove to the nature gods that he is worthy. I want to involve the whole party so its a team effort to help thier friend. The party also has a Rouge, Cleric, and Monk (who is not playing us at the moment cus of work but will be back)
Some notes that I have written down is before he was a druid he attacked a forest and our wizardwas the one had to call forth the gods of nature to protect her home. Being possessed by Gaia she cursed him but neither retained the memories of this.
So how would you all go about testing this druid to prove he can have his body back?
Why did the druid attack a forest in the past? Was he controlled by some powerful being? Tricked? Angered? You might want the test to focus on what caused the initial transgression, to prove he has now overcome that failing.
Alternately, you could set him and his party a task to uncover and root out an active source of corruption -- something that is currently wrecking harm on the natural world, much as he did in the past. Possibly use a failed druid and a blighted grove, or some form of aberration, or an incursion of the Shadowfell. A lot depends on your world and the style of campaign you are running.
Personally, I think I would use a dark influence like something spreading from the Shadowfell and give it a local agent to be the end boss for the encounter. Then add in minions and obstructions. Since you said that you already have a location chosen, you should probably build from that. Is the place remote and dangerous? Are there people nearby? If so, how do they react?
Self Sacrifice is always a good way to show redemption. If you go for the previously noted blighted grove or shadowfell corruption maybe the only way to stop it is for the "wood"forged to sacrifice themself as a reward from the powers that be the woodforged gets reincarnated into their original form, if you are feeling upto it you keep the reward aspect secret until the very end, build it so the player feels it maybe the end of their character or maybe the choice they made was wrong, play on the fears most players have..that their character dies.
You could have a portal that is covered by an Antilife Shell (as per the spell) the rest of the party cannot enter but as the woodforged is technically a construct not flesh and blood they can enter and close the portal which implodes and appears to disintergrate them, then have them reincarnate somewhere safe but preferably out of sight of the rest of the party. Then next session have the newly incarnated Druid find his old party.
These are all really good ideas. Also, maybe have the woodforged druid (and the rest of the party) go on a quest to kill some sort of evil being who is destroying or corrupting a forest protected by Gaia the Mother Goddess. This will allow him to make amends for whatever crime he committed that caused the Goddess to curse him in the first place.
Very cool story concept. Blessed be.
