I’m pretty deep into my first 5e campaign. Im playing a human, and right now I’ve got 5 levels into a Hunter Ranger, and about to hit 4th level in lycan blood hunter. I rolled extremely well for stats so my strength and dex are already maxed, con is 18.
I’m looking at a few different feats that I really like:
Fey Touched- I love misty step and the option for another free 1st level spell is great, plus I’d bump my wisdom to 18. I’d prefer not to have another concentration spell though so the options are pretty limited there
Crusher- I love the flavor of this, and being able to move a creature with an attack seems like it’d be a lot fun to play with. I’m using two weapon fighting with shillelagh and a magic mace that does 1d6 extra thunder damage. So I could get a lot of mileage out of it, the only downside is the str or con increase would be wasted (we probably won’t make it to another asi)
Eldritch adept- I’d take Devils Sight- we’ve spent a lot of time in the underdark and similar areas which always puts me at a disadvantage (though we do have dancing lights and the light cantrip in the party, but those aren’t great for stealth) I feel like thematically this fits the best for a lycan, and would be super useful but it is also the least exciting option for me
I’m a pretty new player still, so any thoughts/advice on what might actually be useful/fun to play with would be greatly appreciated!
Not knowing the rest of your party's build or anything, I would go with Fey Touched. If you don't have anyone else in your party who can do it, Identify is a great utility spell to grab. Command and Charm Person are both very useful enchantment spells that don't take concentration... Command is generally more helpful in combat, but Charm Person can get you out of some sticky non-combat situations.
DIssonant Whispers is another solid early level spell that still proves useful into higher levels... keep in mind that if you hit a creature with it they're still using their own movement, so it will trigger Attacks of Opportunity. Great for enemies that have a really High AC in case you keep missing with attacks. If you had picked it earlier in your build I'd say Sleep is another great 1st level spell, but you're starting to hit the point in the game where it will lose some of its luster. Still, it's great for neutralizing a group of weak or weakened enemies.
Thank you! I was actually leaning toward identify as well. We’ve got several magic items right now that we haven’t quite figured out the properties for, and with one free casting plus a few spell slots I could figure them all out immediately after leveling up. I thought about command and dissonant whispers (I hadn’t thought about using dissonant whispers to force opportunity attacks, that’s rad) too which could both be pretty clutch. I just don’t know if I want to give up a whole action for something that could potentially fail. Especially because my combat action economy is already pretty stacked (Extra attack? hunters Mark/zephyr strike, shillelagh, 2 weapon fighting, and crimson rite) I try to get into combat with shillelagh already cast and crimson rites already going but that’s not always possible of course. But when I’ve got a few of those together my damage output is pretty damn high. plus our bard and other ranger already have combat utility covered with sleep, blindness/deafness, and silence.
It sounds to me like Identify is right up your alley. I think you're right that, as a melee-focused build, you don't need a lot of help in-combat... you've got a lot of tricks up your sleeve already between the features you already have and your ranger spells. Something for out of combat utility that you don't already have covered seems like a great investment. With one free casting of Identify a day you can safely investigate any magic object you come across... whether it's a magic item, some kind of magical trap, or you can even use it to identify spells cast on a creature... maybe someone in your party gets hit with some weird magic and you don't know what it does... cast Identify on them and you'll know. Plus at the end of the day you can just spend some time and spell slots to identify anything you're carrying around with you that you haven't had time to figure out yet.
Dissonant Whispers or other spells like that, for you, would mostly be useful in situations where, for whatever reason, you're unable to attack traditionally. Maybe something is out of range, or something is immune to traditional damage, etc. I don't think it's something you'll necessarily use every day, but it's a good emergency use spell for those times when it would work better than regular attacks.
