Due to the background and lore of a new character idea I had set in a homebrew world I wanted to make them a Swarmkeeper Ranger and Samurai Fighter multiclass.
Now I'm nobodies min-max'er (as you can probably tell by my idea) but I wanted to know what sort of level split would be viable, if at all, or am I just going down a path of complete ruin. I have never multi-classed before so was looking for some tips, general or specific to my exact idea.
I'm the type who tries to minimize multiclassing. So I look at which subclass pays off the most at early levels and take that as the dip and focus on the subclass that has better high level skills. I would personally focus mostly on swarnkeeper with samurai as a three level dip. Samurai gives you it's best features at level three and you really have to dedicate yourself to the subclass to get more out of it, wgiley swarnkeeper is one of the better ranger subclasses that gives solid benefits throughout the class growth. Plus your spellcasting is already at half caster rate, so you don't want to slow it down further.
I always try to get multi attack as soon as possible, so if I were you I would play swarmkeeper to level five, dip into fighter for three levels, then go ranger the rest of the way.
Hey, thanks for the reply that is some really useful advice. My idea was originally to be purely Swarmkeeper but for some RP stuff I thought adding Samurai would be cool. Your advice was super helpful and I agree that Samurai peaks at level 3 and the next being 10 probably, at which point it seems you would forgo a lot of the cool things that makes Swarmkeeper cool as well as the general ranger class progression and spells. I'm still on the fence about going Swarmkeeper completely or going for the 3 level dip, but this was helpful!

Depending on how far you get I'd say the 7th level of Samurai is really worth it for a Fey Wanderer. You will be the smoothest dude in the forest. B)
