long story short we meet a captain who’s a rich daddy’s boy and says he will only ferry us to a treasure island if we entertain him. He was disappointed with the first 2 out of 6 of us so he said “you! Girl....entertain me!”
i said fine, pulled out a pipe bomb and tried to chuck it at a school of fish, roll a nat 1 pipe bomb bounces off the rails of the ship and lands in the center of the ships crew. I attempt to shoot the pipe bomb off the deck into the air but forget it’s made of black powered and explodes instantly taking out 3 members of the ships crew and damaging the ship itself. The captain then ordered us captured for execution and the whole town we just saved is now coming to get us as well.
How did you escape a mistake run amuck? I don’t intend to meta game or anything because any advice will only be referenced according to her personality.
I’d say it’s time to either escape or somehow defuse the situation. I doubt that you can defuse the situation at this point, you killed 3 innocent sailors by being reckless, so it’s time to escape.
Time to book it out of sight and then put your stealth, disguise, and deception skills to use. Is it better to let them “capture” you and then escape at night? Or is it better to just leave now?
I’d suggest running and using your abilities to slow down your pursuers. Even a simple Grease spell will give you a 30-40 foot head start. Something like Fog Cloud followed by circling around behind your pursuers while they’re trying to figure out where you went can also work. I did that once. I cast Fog Cloud, we disappeared into the fog and climbed up a building. An hour later when the fog disappeared we were long gone.
Well we are a party leveling at certain checkpoints at DM choice. We are currently level 3. The captain said capture them but earlier he said if we hurt anyone on his ship will be hung so it’s hard to picture a simple surrender after hearing that. I was originally just gonna spend combat dashing around the ship screaming out apologies.
Thing is I neglected to mention our party level is only 3. We just got a taste of our class specific skills yet none of them are about evasion or illusion. But great ideas none the less
Grease and Fog Cloud are both 1st level spells, so it’s possible that a spell caster in the party has one of them. 3rd level characters are actually pretty powerful, you probably have something creative that you can do with what you have now that you can use to escape without killing anyone else.
How many guys are left on the ship? Can you keep the townsfolk back by holding them hostage? Can you get the captain, at a minimum? Rich daddy's boys make great hostages.
Once you have your hostage(s), if possible, get the ship underway. If not, you wait until dark and then try to escape underwater using an overturned lifeboat for an air pocket or maybe fashioning snorkels?
Do you have a cleric who could load up Calm Emotions during a long rest? Then, a few hours into the hostage crisis, tell the captain how much treasure there is on treasure island (enough to take care of those dead guys' families and still make him rich), and that you're the ones with the map.
If you don't like hostages, are there other nearby ships you can swing onto with ropes and get underway quickly?
A ship itself can be a hostage - those things are expensive! Does the ship have a powder magazine? A knucklehead with a pipe bomb is a mad dog who needs to be put down - a knucklehead with 200 lbs of gunpowder? Now that commands respect.
Without knowing what your resources or ethical lines are, I can't really come up with anything specific. If you ever hope to get these people on your side again, don't kill any more townsfolk trying to escape on land. If you're willing to write off this town, maybe you can cut your way through a mob of peasants and get away.
I hope this will be a teachable moment for you about screwing around with pipe bombs, young lady!
It seems that accidentally becoming pirates may be your best option right now! I'm starting to think that talking your way out of the situation is not going to be easy to do given the circumstances and hoping the watch get involved, you're able to get into their custody and explain the misunderstanding. By the previous failures I'm guessing there isn't anyone particularly charismatic in the party to talk out. The fact that the town have instantly forgotten your good part and turned on you instantly is going to make any negotiation harder too.
It looks like it's going to be little tricks and illusions while the party try and bolt to the hills/woods/nearest available cave systems or cut the ship loose from the docks and take it for yourselves. It's not an easy situation to work around peacefully that's for sure. What is the party make of?
Well the setting is basically the dawn of the Industrial Age. But still heavy dependent on magic, swords, and bows. I’m an engineer with affinity for explosives and guns “gun slinger”
the captain said “capture” not kill but after his warning I’m not comfortable doing any surrendering.
an arcane trickster, gunslinger, monk, cleric, and two warlocks.
Well we are the hero’s of the town for saving several villagers from a cave of jackowares. But down at the docks a ship was available but they made the mistake of mocking my character, so I did a forward roll into a heel kick to one of the sailors nuts. And his partner kinda backed off into his boat and sailed away in a hurry. Then we met this drunkard first mate who introduced us to his captain on board the ship. Thing is he was very rich, very full of himself, and bossy. I was trying to play to his wishes but one bad roll caused me to take out 3 of his men. I did say “tada!!” Nervously, but he didn’t share in my amusement 🤷🏻♂️
If you have Disguise Self, or if another character has Thaumaturgy, you could try altering your appearance enough to deceive the captain into thinking the attack was carried out by a different person trying to frame your group.
Particularly if another character can cast some form of illusion magic on you, then they can try to play it off as having "dispelled" your "disguise", thus revealing the "true culprit". Then you'll have to run like hell to escape, but if it works you can meet up with your party later and have the whole thing smoothed over.

You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.

That's a harsh DM you have. a 1 on an attempt to entertain results in the death of 3 sailors? I would have said on a 1 you miss the fish, maybe scorch the boat a little, I wouldn't blow people up, surrender and plead out to be deck hands for a bit.
If I interpreted correctly, the pipe bomb landed by the sailors due to the critical failure on throwing it. However, it only exploded because they also decided to shoot the bomb after it had landed. That's on the player's decision-making.

I would surrender - for now. The fact that the captain is trying to capture you, instead of kill you right away, means that the GM is probably going to give you an opportunity to escape before you reach the hangman's noose. Maybe you'll be put on trial and given the opportunity to plead your case; maybe you'll find a way to escape the prison cell. Either way, resisting capture will escalate an already-volatile situation, and unless your character is comfortable getting a lot more blood on her hands, it's not a good idea.

You killed 3 sailors, there are 6 of you, offer yourselves as indentured servants for the time necessary to repay the lost of the sailors lives. With 6 of you that'll take half the time :)

There's really only one option here.
You're gonna have to take the ship.

Yes, my point was, I would not have had it land in the middle of the ship
