I currently have a large messy google doc with all my session notes. I was wondering if anyone knew of a better program or way to handle notes. I was thinking something like google sheets with the sheet tabs at the bottom where I could organize by town/ allies/ enemies etc.. but instead of a spread sheet just a text document.
Does anyone know a way to do this or another program that allows this?
Google Docs automatically generates an outline when you use headline formatting, so I write my content according to category and can click on the outline to jump to the sections I need.
Lots of people swear by World Anvil for world building in general and tracking lots of things. I'm pretty sure you can let your players have access to what you put on it, as much or little as you like.
I use Scrivener, which has variable layouts that you can adjust, but the one I use the most has a file menu on the left, with folders for various 'chapters' of story history (you could do one document per session, and one folder per level, or one document per campaign arc, or anything you want. You can view documents individually or read them together as a group) and other folders for research/worldbuilding like notes about the various NPCs, locations, organizations, maps, etc. Then the middle section is the text editor, which can handle tables (but not math functions like excel or sheets), can interlink documents (I have one document where I collate all the divinations, prophetic dreams, etc our characters have) or paste images. Then on the right there's a section where you can have notes that relate just to the specific document you have open in the middle (so if I have my initiative tracker open, my notes might include the height my Aarakocra is flying at, and any conditions or spell effects). You can tag documents by keywords, so if you come across a Mysterious Symbol, you can pull up all the documents you marked that keyword on. And everything is searchable, so if you suddenly realize that island to the north is important, you can search through everything in one go for mentions of islands or ships.
I've been using a wiki to keep my campaign notes and I love it. It's super easy to just double bracket any term that should get its own page and then go to that page to fill in more info. Tiddlywiki is perhaps the easiest way to set up a wiki like this.

I believe OneNote is also a practical option.
