Part of the fun of playing a Warlock is their Patron periodically meddling in their affairs...either pointing the Warlock in a certain direction, cashing in a favor, or furthering some kind of agenda.
Sometimes...it’s just the Patron messing around.
The Genie patron offers quite the variety on how to approach these sorts of encounters...the methodology of say, a Dao, might be entirely different than a Djinn.
I thought it might be fun to brainstorm how...and why...a Genie patron might meddle with a Warlock character.
For instance...a Warlock who frustrates or otherwise earns the ire of their genie patron might be in for a nasty surprise...a Marid might suddenly flood their “Genie Vessel” with saltwater...or an Efreeti may demand a tribute of some kind, or else threaten incineration.
A djinn might conjure some kind of creature for the Warlock to fight for their amusement...or a Dao might temporarily turn the Warlock to stone during a rest...pigeons may or may not be involved.
What are some ideas you all have for such amusements?
I'll probably play a Marid Genie Warlock in an upcoming campaign. The goal of the Marid in this case is not about power, but about stories. His wish is to send my poor changeling out into the world so they can witness stuff he can later use in his stories. I guess his meddling will lead Change into more interesting/dangerous situations. Maybe the marid will reveal them in a situation where they can't be revealed so they gotta run or fight.
For mine the whole pact was a meddling. This rich guy was sitting in the bar I worked at getting wasted and whining all night about his taxes, until I said "Come on buddy, it's not that bad. I only wish I had your problems..." and he said "GRANTED" Now I have a 5,000,000gp tax debt, an unspeakable gambling debt to a barlgurl, back child support for 35 different fire Genasi, and Eldritch Blast.
well the point is to make this fun, and not a punishment for the player. if the Genie is going to send his minion somewhere, its along the party;s path. There will be plenty of time to do the mission. AND it will not conflict with the player's goals.
I planning a genie warlock with the good will of a Djinn. He is an escaped slave himself, so his wish was, "I wish you and your family will never be enslaved again!" The genie departed gratefully, but returned later with an offer of power.
requests could be closing a portal to the plane of air in a wizard's tower the party was going to hit anyway. The wizard had plans to enslave genies but wasn't quite powerful enough just yet.
a Marid could have a magic goldfish. he will order his minion to drop a single scale on the floor of places of power. there will always be a single orangish/golden scale in the possession of the warlock. when dropped it will meld into the floor without leaving a mark. and whenever he reaches his hand in his pocket, he will find another scale. Anyplace could be a place of power. a courtroom, a gallows, a library, every temple or shrine, Castles, etc. There is a method to this madness but the lock has no idea what he is doing. Is the marid up to no good, or is he empowering himself in some way?
a dao might command a collection of worthless rocks which disappear from time to time, replaced by a 10 GP gem. He might actually PAY the party to protect a fossil from cultists who want to destroy it.
