I am need to choose a Sorcerer (or cleric) cantrip and am thinking between Resistance, Blade Ward and Sword Burst.
Resistance: to add saves bonus to our Rogue for disabling traps (our cleric generally does bless) Blade Ward (with Quicker spell to be able to fight hard in melee and look awesome / Tough) Sword Burst (with Quicker Spell to damage multiple adjacent foes)
Roleplaying wise he's a scary man that used to be on the verge of being a villain and is trying to make himself better man and joined the group because of their heroic reputation. For now he is still trying to keep his scary reputation, and is having trouble trying to be a better person as he doesn’t want to seem weak. The group actually likes his familiar more whom is a cheerfully soul by the name of Kat (I actually roleplay them equally as two separate characters) who loves cookies, song and anything cheerful. They are collectively an odd couple which I have fun roleplay as them being partners.
Tactically Kerrans role is to be a rotationary character (sometimes in the front row, sometimes as an artillerist), our group isn't the best on tactics or crowd control and the way the DM plays a lot of enemies break our lines (lots of Jump, blink ect) so Kerran can fill any role needed. Kat should be our scout but isn’t, she accompanies our scout so kerran and Kat can communicate telepathically.
Stats AC 21 (26 with Shield), HP 98 (+29 with inspiring speech and Aid) Str 8, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 13 Cha 20
Cantrips Booming Blade, Eldritch Blast, Green-Flame Blade, Guidance, Mage Hand, Mind Sliver, Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation
I have a magic Flying ship, A magic Rapier that does extra damage to Undead, fey & fiends, and basic gear (+ armor, + 1 shield and ring of protection) and boots of Elven Kind. My familar Kat has a belt of Giant Str (21) and items to increase her AC
The rest of the group: a Human Cleric (War), a Human Paladin/Sorcerer (smite DPS), Elven Wizard/Evoker, Halfling Bard/Lore, Half elf Rogue/scout
My first question would be what Cantrips do you already know?
edit: duh...they're already listed
As far as your three options, I don't think I'd take any of them.
Resistance: to add saves bonus to our Rogue for disabling traps (our cleric generally does bless)
Resistance isn't on the Sorcerer or Warlock spell list, so I'm a bit confused as to what class you are. Are you a Warlock and taking Magic Initiate? Or are you a Divine Soul Sorcerer (accidently posted in the wrong forum) and are looking for a cantrip? Either way, it uses concentration so in combat there are so many better things to use your concentration and quite honestly your action on. It has some out of combat usage if someone is about to do something that you know will require a save, but it's way to circumstantial.
Blade Ward (with Quicker spell to be able to fight hard in melee and look awesome / Tough)
Again, I wouldn't. If you're a Warlock who multi-classed into Sorcerer or a Warlock who took the magic Initiate feat, you won't have enough Sorcery points for this to be useful. If you're a Sorcerer, the cost of 2 Sorcery Points to impose disadvantage...when you can just cast Shield is too high. And yes, you can use 2 Sorcery Points to create a first level spell so they may seem equal, but they're not. Odds are if you're running out of first level spells for Shield, there are bigger problems.
Sword Burst (with Quicker Spell to damage multiple adjacent foes)
As a Sorcerer don't get caught in melee...if you do, this can be an ok option if you are surrounded by 3 or more foes. But literally proc it and Misty Step away *then* use your walking speed to get even more distance.
But if you're surrounded by two or less, Misty Step away, twin a firebolt for 1 Sorcery Point, then run
Much better options would include
Guidance (Cleric): 1d4 bonus to ability checks like Stealth and Sleight of Hand for the rogue. But your Cleric probably has this
Mind Sliver (Sorcery+Warlock): 1d4 penalty to saving throws if hit...helpful when multiple people have it, but doesn't stack per se
Minor Illusion (Sorcery+Warlock): Has creative usages in and out of combat
Prestidigitation (Sorcery+Warlock): Not a combat spell, but a useful out of combat spell
Shocking Grasp (Sorcery+Warlock): If one enemy is in melee this stops them from using reactions when hit. Advantage if they're wearing metal armor
Toll the Dead (Cleric+Warlock): Targets Wisdom saves...not as good as Eldritch Blast but I don't know if you are a Warlock or not
edit: I feel a bit silly not reading past your three suggestions since a lot of my questions are in the post. With that being said, I still wouldn't take the three options you have listed
Sorcery Points aren't my problem (12 points atm) so I can use them fairly frequency and being a 5th level Warlock I can get quite a few spells back per short rest (2 x 3rd levels). I posted in this thread instead of other classes because being a hybrid type character, those that have played Hexblades with the better AC might be able to relate better with a spellcaster that can dip into the front lines sometimes. This characters strength is his versatility of being able to support into any role. He can assist the front lines (decent Melee), bring fallen comrades back (healing word/revivify) , Artillerist and crowd control (a lot of his spells).
I have Guidance, Mild sliver, Minor Illusion and Prestidigitation already. The suggestion for using misty step and using what I have is a great suggestion. part of a sorcerer or warlock is trying to use what you have for various different situations instead of using something new so that's great advice :D
Between Darkness & Improved invisibility he quite often has disadvantage from foes to hit him. I thought about Toll the Dead and thought that between Eldrict blast & Mind Sliver that he has enough targeted cantrips. Shocking grasp I thought that getting away I could just use misty step so I didn't need a cantrip for that. There is no rush for me to choice the cantrip either and I may sit on it empty for a while and see what I wish I had over a few sessions.
