One thing to keep in mind is what is the max level of the campaign.
The warlock invocation, thirsting blade, does not stack with extra attack. So if you go five levels into paladin there's no need to get this invocation.
Relentless hex, maddening hex, cloak of flies, and life drinker. These invocations will probably benefit you the most.
Really, You want as many levels of warlock for this build. More levels means more invocations and pact slots, while a couple levels of vengeance paladin get you hunters mark, allowing you to skip on hex, or take it and have better variation. Vow of enmity coupled with hexblade's curse is one of the most op low level things I've ever heard. Take 3 levels of vengance, or 4 if you decide that an ASI is better than a 9th level mystic arcanum.

If you're starting at first level I would definitely start with paladin. To get the heavy armor proficiency.
For this build I would not get the hex spell. The damage for both hex and Hunter's Mark are the same. They both have the transfer property. As a warlock you are very limited on how many spells you can learn. I would substitute the hex spell for hellish rebuke. It's a reaction spell.
I would probably go up to third level in paladin before you multi-class into warlock for three levels to pick up your boon. Then two more levels and paladin to pick up extra attack.
The rest would be in warlock. Although I do recommend going six levels in paladin to pick up the aura of protection.
At least 6 levels of paladin (aura is too good to pass up) and at least 5 levels of warlock for Eldritch Smite. Other than that...up to you, really. I have played with this build also. I have considered 12 paladin/8 warlock, 15 paladin/5 warlock. Honestly, once you have 6 paladin and 5 warlock, you can make an argument for most combinations of levels. There are useful things all along the way. Another thing to consider is how important ASI/feats are to you?

Yeah. Hunter's Mark is generally similar to hex, but they do different things. Hunter's Mark is definitely better for tracking a criminal or something. And with limited spell slots, Hex isn't giving you anything good enough to smoke a spell known for. But just have one to survive the dm's TPK Dragon.

oof. If that one line wasn't in the phb that would actually be a pretty good build.
