Hello! Do you guys have advise of a good 1 level dip to improve survivabillity to a wizard? It might not be quite as big of an issue in normal groups but I play in AL and the tank running away does happen there from time to time. Then it is good to be able to survive in melee as well.
So far I have 3 ideas: 1 Dip into fighter for medium armor, fighting style (-1 armor), the second wind self heal and loads of weapon skills that I would not use. I would end up a level behind in spell progression though.
2 No multiclassing but pick bladesinging for my wizard. I wont get behind a level spell progression, but I will lack some cool effects when it comes to spells from for example evocation. Biggest drawback is that I get forced to play elf. Highelfs are good, but I kind of wanted to play a gnome this time.
3 Dipping 1 level into grave cleric for medium armor. As I would dip into a full caster I would not get behind in the spell slots, only the spell level progression for my wizard. I would also get a nifty thing for the party if party members fall unconcious - either spare the dying as a ranged bonus action when I do not have a spell slot to spare, or a ranged healing word that heal the maximum numer of hitpoints if I have spell slots to spare.
If you have any thoughts on this, or if you have a better option I am appy to hear it!
There's no right or wrong answer here since it depends on what kinds of things you want to defend against and how much you're willing to derail your wizard progression. It also depends on what your ability scores are since that changes how effectively you can use heavy armor. Forge, Life, Nature and Order domains will grant access to heavy armor but you'd be taking a speed penalty if you don't have enough strength, and if you've already invested in DEX you might've been better off dumping that score from the start.
School of Abjuration and War Magic are effective alternatives to Bladesinging.
Second Wind and Defense Fighting Style on their own aren't worth taking a level in Fighter as a spellcaster. You might as well take a level in Life Domain Cleric instead.
Maybe you should explain the context of the question around survivability. For instance: what other classes are in your party? What race are you playing? What kind of campaign is it - urban, Ravenloft-like, swampy, dungeon-crawl?
