These well-worn leather boots were the early work of a novice artificer who nearly got the enchantment right. The spell to enhance speed functions perfectly, but a flaw in the magic causes each step to produce a loud, ridiculous sound: one boot squeaks, the other honks.
While wearing the boots, you can click the heels together as a bonus action to activate them. Click them together again to deactivate the effect. While the boots are active:
- Your speed is doubled.
- Creatures have disadvantage on opportunity attacks made against you.
- Every step you take produces a loud squeak or honk, audible up to 60 feet away. You have disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks that involve movement.
- If you move more than 10 feet on your turn, each creature within 30 feet that can hear the sound must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn.
When you’ve used the boots’ property for a total of 10 minutes, the magic ceases to function for you until you finish a Long Rest.
“The boots work. Fast as hell. Just don’t expect to sneak up on anyone… ever.”
—R&D notes, scribbled in the margin: “Fix sound bug?”
Notes: Bonus: Speed, Disadvantage: Stealth, Buff, Movement, Utility, Footwear
