Wondrous Item, legendary (requires attunement by a Creature of Evil Alignment)

The origins and original intent of the Throne of Bones is a boundless mystery. Some speculate that Orcus himself created the chair from the remains of divine beings he slaughtered. Others believe it was a gift to the Prince of Undeath that he discarded out of spite or hubris. It has survived many millennia and seen the rise and fall of countless undead empires. Unto the creature that sits the throne is conferred a limited sovereignty over undeath. It has the power to corrupt even the mightiest of souls. Additionally, it protects its master with a legion of haunted specters and skeletons.

Attuning to this item requires a price of blood. A sentient creature must willingly harm itself while sitting upon the throne (doing at least 5 hit points worth of damage.) Only a creature of evil alignment can attune to the throne without further consequence. A creature that is neither good nor evil in alignment takes 6d6 necrotic damage for each minute it is attuned to the throne. A good creature takes 8d6 necrotic damage for each minute it spends attuned. Only a Remove Curse or Greater Restoration spell can end a creature's attunement once established.

While attuned to the Throne of Bones you gain immunity to necrotic damage and you cannot become charmed or frightened. You also gain resistance to poison and radiant damage. Additionally, you and any undead within 60 feet of the throne have advantage on saving throws against effects that turn undead. You have limited influence over undead that can see or hear you. No undead creature can directly disobey a command you give (verbally or non-verbally) without succeeding on a DC 18 Charisma saving throw.

The Throne of Bones has 20 charges. If you are sitting upon the throne, you can use a bonus action to expend a number of charges from the throne required to cast one of the following spells without material components. Spells you cast have a DC of 18 and an attack bonus of +10 or the DC and attack bonus for your spellcasting feature (whichever is greater.) The throne regains 1d6 charges at midnight each night.

1 Charge: Cause Fear, Ray of Sickness, Blindness/Deafness

2 Charges: Bestow Curse, Summon Undead Spirit, Vampiric Touch

3 Charges: Blight, Shadow of Moil

4 Charges: Enervation

5 Charges: Circle of Death

Once per round, when a living creature dies within 120 feet of the Throne of Bones, you can use your reaction to harvest the escaping life force of that creature. If you do, the throne recovers a number of charges equal to that creature's Constitution modifier (minimum 1.) In addition, the corpse of that creature becomes a ghoul under your control. You can mentally command all ghouls within 120 feet of you that were created in this way with a bonus action on each of your turns. If you issue no commands, the ghouls attack any creature they can see that is not an undead or construct. Once given an order, the ghouls continue to follow it until their task is complete.

When you are not sitting upon the throne but are within 120 feet you can use a bonus action to summon the throne to you. When summoned, skeletons and specters within the thrones construction cause the throne to fly and move directly toward you at a speed of 50 feet per turn.

The Throne of Bones can be destroyed, at least temporarily. It is unaffected by fire, cold, necrotic, poison, piercing, slashing, and electricity damage. Attacking the throne with non-magical weapons has no effect. The throne has a an Armor Class of 18 and 200 hit points. If reduced to 0 hit points, it explodes in a shower of bones, dealing 4d6 damage to all within a 30 foot radius. Any ghouls created by the throne and any creature attuned to the throne at the time of its destruction are stunned for 1d4 turns. The throne remains destroyed for at least 13 years, at the end of which it reforms somewhere underground near the corpses of at least one evil creature. It then waits patiently for a new master.
