This artifact originates from the world of Athas (The Dark Sun -setting ) and is one of the most powerful weapons ever forged in that dying world.
The Scorcher was created by the First Sorcerer and Warbringer Rajaat, to assist one of his mighty champions in the Cleansing Wars which brought ruin to Athas. The Scorcher is constructed of the same unidentifiable red alloy as the Silencer, and is much harder than enchanted steel. The Scorcher’s blade is perfectly smooth, and the hilt contains a red glowing runes. The hilt is constructed of unbreakable obsidian, wrapped in the hide of an ancient fire drake. The pommel is a tooth from said fire drake, and its point is razor sharp. When used in combat, ebony, flames appear from the blade and burn opponents with cold, black, fire. The long sword is amazingly light and well balanced, and all but the most feeble or diminutive warriors can wield it.
Random Properties.
The Scorcher has the following random properties:
- 1 minor beneficial property
- 1 major beneficial property
- 1 minor detrimental property
- 1 major detrimental property
The Scorcher is a magic, sentient longsword that grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. It has the finesse property for those with a Strength Score of 17 or above.
Ebony Flames. The sword deals and extra 1d6 fire damage to any creature it hits. This damage ignores resistance and immunity to fire damage.
Iron Willed. While attuned to the sword, you are constantly under the effect of the Mind Blank-spell.
Fire Protection. While attuned to this sword, you are immune to fire damage.
Render of Protection. Attacks with this sword ignore Armor Class gained from magical spells, effects and items, such as Mage Armor or the Shield -spell and magic items such as Braces of Defense. For example, a wizard with 14 Dex who has Mage Armor has a AC of 15. Against attacks from Scorcher , their AC would be 12.
Purpose-Driven. The Scorcher gains more abilities based on the users alignment. If the owner of the sword has a lawful alignment (good, neutral, or evil), then the blade functions as a Vorpal Sword. If the wielder of the Scorcher is neutral in alignment (good, evil, or true neutral), then the blade functions as a Sword of Wounding. If the possessor of the blade is chaotic (good, neutral, or evil), then the blade functions as a Sword of Sharpness.
Spells. While holding the sword, you are under the effect of the Protection from Good and Evil and the Blur -spell (no concentration). You can use an action to cast one of the following spells (save 18, +9 to hit) from it if it is on your person: Inflict Wounds (5th level), True Seeing, Wall of Fire or Heal (only on Self). Once you use the sword to cast a spell, you can't cast that spell again from it until the next dawn.
Sentience. The Scorcher is a sentient, neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 10, a Wisdom of 16, and a Charisma of 18. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 30 feet.
The sword communicates by transmitting emotion to the creature carrying or wielding it.
Personality. The sword is driven by whatever it’s possessor desires most. If the wielder of the Scorcher is intent on killing innocent villagers, the sword lends its power to the gruesome task. If the wielder wishes the death of the mighty sorcerer-kings, then the Scorcher wants nothing more than to drink their blood. The attitude of the Scorcher is not one of good or evil, but of purpose. The Scorcher is not a weapon that will ever hang on someone’s trophy wall. If the Scorcher is ever without a purpose it is either lost by the wielder, or it summons someone within a 30 mile radius that would have use of its powers in some sort of campaign. This challenger fights the wielder of the sword for its possession, and the Scorcher’s powers do not work for the idle possessor.
Curse. The user attuned to Scorcher gains the following flaw: "I am focused on the task at hand or my individual purpose, and nothing else matters."
Proficiency with a Longsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Sap. If you hit a creature with this weapon, that creature has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of your next turn.
