A weapon borne of wood and metal as dark as the depths from which they were harvested. The weapon seems to draw in the ambient light around it, and when bathed in darkness, becomes completely invisible.
Dormant
While wielding the Yklwa of Shadows in its dormant state, it has the following benefits:
- You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
- Wielding this weapon allows you to cast Summon Shadowspawn at 3rd level, once per day. The spell ends if you stop concentrating on the spell or you lose control of the Yklwa of Shadows.
- You are immune to the effects of the Shadowfell’s despair.
Awakened
When Yklwa of Shadows reaches an awakened state, it gains the following properties:
- You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
- When you cast Summon Shadowspawn, you do so at 5th level.
- If you were to drop to 0 hit points as a result of an attack and your summoned shadow spirit is within 30 feet, it may use its reaction to sacrifice itself to reduce that damage you would take to 0.
- On a critical hit using this weapon, you may teleport up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
Exalted
When Yklwa of Shadows reaches an exalted state, it gains the following properties:
- You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
- When you cast Summon Shadowspawn, you do so at 7th level.
- Your weapon becomes an instrument of focus for your Ki. By spending 5 Ki points, you channel much of your energy into a single, focused, and unerring strike. You deal an automatic critical hit to a single creature, object, or structure within 5 feet without the need to roll to hit. Structures hit using this feature are dealt double damage in combination with the critical hit.
A yklwa (pronounced YICK-ul-wah) is a simple melee weapon that is the traditional weapon of Chultan warriors. A yklwa consists of a 3-foot wooden shaft with a steel or stone blade up to 18 inches long. It costs 1 gp, and it deals 1d8 piercing damage on a hit. Although it has the thrown weapon property, the yklwa is not well balanced for throwing (range 10/30 ft.).
