Stolen from the Demon Prince of the Abyss, the obsidian blade of Valmoth, Heartcleaver shimmers with eldritch energy, echoed whispers of screams cry out in Abyssal. A golden demon's skull decorate the piece, with glowing eyes of sapphires.
You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. In addition, Heartcleaver also deals 1d8/1d12 necrotic damage. It has the following additional properties.
As a bonus action, the axe can change its form to be wielded as either an axe or battleaxe.
Devour Soul
Whenever you use it to reduce a creature to 0 hit points, the axe slays the creature and devours its soul, unless it is a construct or an undead. A creature whose soul has been devoured by Heartcleaver can be restored to life only by a wish spell.
In addition, when you use Heartcleaver to reduce a demon to 0 hit points, the axe slays the creature, devours its soul and cleaves out its heart. In doing so, the demon is permanently killed and will not return to its native plane.
When it devours a soul, Heartcleaver grants you temporary hit points equal to the damage of the strike that killed it. These hit points fade after 24 hours. As long as these temporary hit points last and you keep Heartcleaver in hand, you have advantage on attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks.
If you hit an undead with this weapon, you take 1d10 necrotic damage and the target regains 1d10 hit points. If this necrotic damage reduces you to 0 hit points, Heartcleaver devours your soul.
Dark One's Own Luck
You can call on the imprisoned Demon Lord to alter fate in your favor. When you make an ability check or a saving throw, you can use this feature to add a d10 to your roll. You can do so after seeing the initial roll but before any of the roll's effects occur.
Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Soul Hunter
While you hold the weapon, you are aware of the presence of Tiny or larger creatures within 60 feet of you that aren’t constructs or undead. You also can’t be charmed or frightened.
Heartcleaver can cast the haste spell on you once per day. It decides when to cast the spell and maintains concentration on it so that you don’t have to.
Heart of Ruin
While attuned to Heartcleaver, the air around you becomes filled with the stench of rotting flesh, and buzzing flies grow thick in the surrounding area, even when there is no carrion to be found. The flesh of the wielder looks to rot and degrade, as their eyes turn black and abyssal, turning towards undeath in appearance. Devouring the soul of a Demon sates these effects for 24 hours.
Whilst within 60ft of any creature that is killed, the soul is devoured by the Heartcleaver. In addition, humanoids whose souls have been devoured will rise on their next turn as zombies and serve the will of Heartcleaver. The wielder has no control of these creatures, and the effects cannot be sated by the devouring of a demon's soul.
Sentience
Heartcleaver is a sentient chaotic evil weapon with an Intelligence of 20, a Wisdom of 20, and a Charisma of 25. It has hearing and truesight out to a range of 120 feet.
The weapon can speak, read, and understand Common, and can communicate with its wielder telepathically. Its voice is deep and echoing. While you are attuned to it, Heartcleaver also understands every language you know.
Abyssal Resistance
Whilst attuned to Heartcleaver, you gain resistance to cold, fire, lightning; piercing, slashing and bludgeoning from nonmagical attacks. You also gain immunity to necrotic damage.
Personality
Heartcleaver speaks with an imperious tone, as though accustomed to being obeyed.
The axe's purpose is to consume the souls of Demons. But it doesn’t care whose souls it eats, including the wielder’s. The axe believes that with enough souls of its kind, then it will gain the power to escape its purgatory.
Heartcleaver uncontrollable hunger for demon hearts and souls must be regularly fed. If the wielder actively moves away from a Demon, the wielder will take 8d6 necrotic damage and immunity to necrotic damage will end until Heartcleaver is sated.
Proficiency with a Greataxe allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Cleave. If you hit a creature with a melee attack roll using this weapon, you can make a melee attack roll with the weapon against a second creature within 5 feet of the first that is also within your reach. On a hit, the second creature takes the weapon’s damage, but don’t add your ability modifier to that damage unless that modifier is negative. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.
