Armor (plate), artifact (requires attunement)

Wraithplate is an incredibly powerful suit of armor originally made by a cabal of liches for their most powerful knight, Artian. It is a suit of gleaming wrought-silver, with swirls set into its surface in seemingly random patterns that seem to shift and almost form parts of names as the wearer moves. Wraith plate is extremely lightweight and moves silently, imposing no penalty on Stealth checks.

While you're wearing this armor, you can speak its command word as an action to gain the effect of the etherealness spell, which last for 10 minutes or until you remove the armor or use an action to speak the command word again. This property of the armor can't be used again until the next dawn.

While wearing this armor and being attuned to it, you can cast plane shift using no material components at will. Casting the spell in this way takes 5 minutes, and can only target the caster, taking them to and from the Ethereal Plane.

While being attuned to and wearing Wraithplate, you are immune to all effects that would extract or destroy your soul, such as the spell soul cage.

If you die while attuned to and wearing Wraithplate, your soul is ejected onto the Ethereal Plane. The soul looks exactly like you when you first attuned to the armor, but all color has been drained from you. While in this state you are able to move as normal, but are unable to interact with anything physically or use any abilities you had in life. You can remain in this form indefinitely, requiring no sustenance or sleep. Creatures on the Material Plane appear to you as balls of floating light. If touched, the creature’s race, species, gender, and any abilities it has are immediately known to you. You can attempt to force your soul into any touched creature’s body. The creature must make a DC 16 Intelligence saving throw. If it succeeds, you are pushed out of its mind and can never attempt to possess it again. If it fails, you take full control of its body, making it your permanent host and annihilating its soul permanently. You retain all mental stats and your original consciousness, but now use all the physical stats and abilities of the new body, including arcane spellcasting ability. Divine spellcasters possessed in this way lose all abilities granted by their god unless you are also a follower of that god, in which case you retain all abilities granted by that god. You gain no knowledge of the possessed creature’s life or mind, and simply replace it’s mind and soul with your own.

Upon successful possession, roll a D20. On a 1, the creature you possessed leaves a small imprint of themselves upon your mind, which constantly fights for dominance. Each time a new piece is left, roll on the Temporary Madness table. If the number of pieces in your head reaches 3, you must now roll on the Long-Term Madness table each time a new piece is added. If the number of pieces in your head reaches 6, you must now roll on the Indefinite Madness table each time a new piece is added. If the number of pieces in your head reaches 9, the save DC for your possession increases to 20, and you become immune to any mind-affecting effects as your consciousness is too splintered to subdue or control. Additionally, any mind that attempts to hear or communicate with your thoughts must make a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw or be infected by your madness, and must roll on the Temporary Madness table.

Plate consists of shaped, interlocking metal plates to cover the entire body. A suit of plate includes gauntlets, heavy leather boots, a visored helmet, and thick layers of padding underneath the armor. Buckles and straps distribute the weight over the body.
