Wondrous Item, rare
This rope is 30 feet long and weighs 3 pounds. If you hold one end of the rope and use an action to speak its command word, the other end darts forward to entangle a creature you can see within 20 feet of you. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or become restrained.
You can release the creature by using a bonus action to speak a second command word. A target restrained by the rope can use an action to make a DC 15 Strength or Dexterity check (target’s choice). On a success, the creature is no longer restrained by the rope.
The rope has AC 20 and 20 hit points. It regains 1 hit point every 5 minutes as long as it has at least 1 hit point. If the rope drops to 0 hit points, it is destroyed.
Notes: Restrained, Control
"I grab the rope, pull out my dagger, and slice it in half!"
-- 'Make an attack roll.'
"Why? It's in my hand."
--Please just make the attack roll.'
*sigh* "Okay." ... "19 to hit."
-- 'The rope dodges'.
AC represents all dimensions of being difficult to harm. Literal armor, dodging, slipperiness, immunity to pain, and all forms of imperviousness.
In the ropes case, a *sensible* interpretation is the ropes enchanted nature makes in very difficult to damage, so anything other than a full force swing does nil.
Exactly. Rolling a 19 only means you missed it in terms of game mechanics. A DM can describe it any way they like. "You saw away with your dagger, but it doesn't appear to do any damage to the enchanted rope."
it can kill good!!!!!!! pop of the head with the rope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yessssssssss
Wait, it's JUST a dex or strength check to escape? Not athletics or acrobatics?
So proficiency doesn't apply to escape once you are already restrained? That's.... A bit crazy. I love it.
So you know, saving throws don't normally apply skill proficiencies. That's how it's always been. Unless as DM one would wish to change that.
What we do is: wrap it wrap it round round, then we make you fall down
you are like cinnamon
This is most definitely a reference to Bad Lip Reading. Thank you for this.
i honestly did not think anyone would get that joke good job
Since the rope doesn't require attunement, can ANYBODY speak the command word to release the creature being restrained? Or does the person who is holding the other end of the rope have to say it? Also, does the other end have to remain held by the original person to speak the command word?
I believe that it's more implied that the rope only listens to the person who has it in their hand, but honestly I believe that it's the dm's choice to how they would go about that. I believe it would be absolutely hilarious if anyone could say the command word for the rope to respond, adds an obstacle in the game for the players to overcome that could have a hilarious kind of uno reverse card effect on the players.
Could be a great magic item, if it wasn`t designed so badly. No resistance/immunity to non-magical attacks. No resistance/immunity to piercing/bludgeonig dmg.
Pretty bad for a RARE magic item.
It actually does have resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage.
just realized that there is no size limit so you could use it on a anything which includes the turtle that carries the world.
Where does it say the rope is resistant to nonmagical bludgeoning/piercing/slashing damage?
Most magic item's are resistant to mundane damage like bludgeoning piercing and slashing, the rope is a magic item, therefore it has that resistance, as for where to find this because you will ask.
DMG chapter 7 under "item resilence" in the magic item's section.
edit: Changed meaning.
Very cool! I read the DMG multiple time, but I don't remember seeing this. I always described magic items as being less fragile, but didn't know there was a rule about that. Thank you for the enlightenement.
A magic net is a bit better, but losing a magic item is never a nice feeling.
It's not a potion or a scroll, so one could rule it has resistance to all damage.
Page 141 of the DMG:
Magic Item Resilience
Most magic items are objects of extraordinary artisanship, assembled from the finest materials with meticulous attention to detail. Thanks to this combination of careful crafting and magical reinforcement, a magic item is at least as durable as a regular item of its kind. Most magic items, other than potions and scrolls, have resistance to all damage. Artifacts are practically indestructible, requiring extreme measures to destroy.
I've only seen these deployed in the hands of an Erinyes.
I think if someone fails their save against the rope twice in a row they shouldn't be able to save against it again for an hour, and then only one chance per hour. Otherwise even if you succeed in tying someone up with it they're likely to get free within half a minute, statistically speaking, which is definitely not how being tied up works. Also, I like the idea that the harder you struggle against it the tighter the bonds become, which sounds like something a magical rope of entangling would do.
Damn, +1 Nets Older brother
