Weapon (any sword that deals slashing damage), legendary (requires attunement)
You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. In addition, the weapon ignores resistance to slashing damage.
When you attack a creature that has at least one head with this weapon and roll a 20 on the attack roll, you cut off one of the creature's heads. The creature dies if it can't survive without the lost head. A creature is immune to this effect if it is immune to slashing damage, doesn't have or need a head, has legendary actions, or the GM decides that the creature is too big for its head to be cut off with this weapon. Such a creature instead takes an extra 6d8 slashing damage from the hit.
Applicable Weapons:
| Name | Type | Damage | Properties |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greatsword | Martial Melee | 2d6 + 3 slashing | Heavy, two-handed |
| Longsword | Martial Melee | 1d8 + 3 slashing | Versatile (1d10) |
| Scimitar | Martial Melee | 1d6 + 3 slashing | Finesse, light |
Notes: Bonus: Magic, Damage, Combat

Posted Mar 20, 2020Correct, it would still do no damage. It's worded that way just to specify that a creature that can't be cut also can't have its head cut off

Posted Apr 7, 2020I lowkey for a second misread that and thought you were saying the same thing about the 6d8 not doubling lol
It's weird how proof that it does is posted here, but people keep spouting the same "it doesn't double"
It's odd

Posted May 12, 2020So, I've figured out the whole "6d8 on a 20" thing.
Yes, generally speaking, a 20 is always a crit. But, certain equipment and abilities, like adamantine armour, negate crit damage.
So, if you roll the 20, but the enemy doesn't take crit damage, they still take the 6d8 damage. If they DO take crit damage, it becomes 12d8 damage. And if you crit on 18-19, you don't get the 6d8 at all.

Posted May 15, 2020Is it only 20s or if you're playing champion and you get a 19 does that activate that effect?

Posted May 31, 2020the 6d8 is BECAUSE of the crit. It doesn't happen normally, so it wouldn't double.

Posted May 31, 2020No, it is because of a 20. There is a mechanical distinction between something that happens on a 20 and something that happens on a crit. Doubling these dice has been explicitly confirmed by Jeremy Crawford.
