Weapon (any sword that deals slashing damage), legendary (requires attunement)
You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. In addition, the weapon ignores resistance to slashing damage.
When you attack a creature that has at least one head with this weapon and roll a 20 on the attack roll, you cut off one of the creature's heads. The creature dies if it can't survive without the lost head. A creature is immune to this effect if it is immune to slashing damage, doesn't have or need a head, has legendary actions, or the GM decides that the creature is too big for its head to be cut off with this weapon. Such a creature instead takes an extra 6d8 slashing damage from the hit.
Applicable Weapons:
| Name | Type | Damage | Properties |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greatsword | Martial Melee | 2d6 + 3 slashing | Heavy, two-handed |
| Longsword | Martial Melee | 1d8 + 3 slashing | Versatile (1d10) |
| Scimitar | Martial Melee | 1d6 + 3 slashing | Finesse, light |
Notes: Bonus: Magic, Damage, Combat

Posted Dec 2, 2018Since the 6d8 only applies on a 20 roll on creatures with no heads, and since a 20 on an attack roll is a critical, do the 6d8s naturally become 12d8 or does it stay as a 6d8?

Posted Dec 23, 2018The legendary actions thing preventing a decapitation seems odd because you could chop off the head of Laeral Silverhand if you were so inclined but not Jarlaxle Baenre

Posted Apr 28, 2019The 6d8 dice are doubled in a critical, because the trigger is a 20 roll and not a critical. If you have an enhanced critical (19-20 or 18-20) this won't trigger the sword effect. Also there's a sage advice about this: https://www.sageadvice.eu/2016/07/30/vorpal-sword-does-the-6d8-get-doubled/?fbclid=IwAR0kcOry_am6UBvZYE0GzXTrLb-BrEjSMpXzh_sFpF1Jq4FKevkPFoecPlE

Posted May 17, 2019In any other context, the question "does this creature have a head" would be the most idiotic thing ever said around a table. But in DnD...

Posted May 31, 2019I'm sure glad I don't rely on the dndb comments section for mechanics questions because "it doesn't double from the crit" is absolutely incorrect.

Posted Jul 4, 2019When rolling our characters for a starter campaign, our paladin tried to sneak a vorpal longsword into his inventory as a joke because he saw it listed as an example of a weapon. Rather than disallow it, DM decided to give it to him, but at the cost of a curse to add flavor to the character.
The curse is that he gets to use all the benefits of the blade, but whatever damage he inflicts on a member of a civilized (playable) race, gets done on him, as well. So while it is great against legit monsters and has saved our necks on more than one occasion, he has to sheathe it in town and more formal encounters, lest he risk losing his own head on a 20 roll.

Posted Aug 17, 2019What if you had fire immunity and cast Heat Metal as a 9th level spell, on a 20 it’s either an insta-kill or 9d6 fire damage, 4d6, 6d8 +6 slashing damage giving an max of 132 damage I believe
