A twisted solid yew branch beautifully polished with a gnarled knob of wood on one end, tapering to a smooth end on the other. Engravings of green silver vines wrap down the polished wood shaft. Elvish script concealed amongst the vines as if part of the design reveals the item's Command Word. A plain silver cap covers the thin end, and veins of silver verdigris twist through the grains of the knobby end. As a Bonus Action, the user can utter the item's command word, causing the branch to shrink or grow in size -- from a Yew Quarterstaff to a Yew Wand, or visa versa. In either form the item is usable by sorcerer, warlock, wizard or druid as an arcane or druidic spellcasting focus. The item's length and width is typical for the size of creature that last used the item and uttered its command word.
As a Wand: the item acts merely as a spell focus. It is about 1 foot in length for a medium user, weighing about 1 pound. The knob end sits comfortably in the palm of the users hand. A Rare version of this item confers a +1 bonus to spell attack rolls and caster's spell save DC, but unlike the Uncommon version requires Attunement. A Very Rare version is the same as the Rare version but confers a +2 modifier.
As a Staff: the item acts a spell focus and as a magic melee weapon. In staff form it deals the same damage as a quarterstaff: 1d6 bludgeoning, Versatile (1d8 when wielding two-handed). In addition, the staff is considered a magic weapon when attacking creatures with non-magical weapon damage resistance or immunity. The staff is about 8 feet in length, weighing about 4 pounds for a medium user. The branch thickens at a slightly different rate as it inflates from wand size until it reaches the width of a typical staff (for medium users about 1&1/2 inches thick on thin metal tipped end, to about 3 inches on the thick end with the knob on top a little larger than a typical medium creature's fist). The Rare version of this item confers a +1 bonus to melee and spell attacks made with the staff, as well as to the spellcaster's spell save DC. But unlike the Uncommon version requires Attunement. The Very Rare version is the same as the Rare version but confers a +2 modifier.
