The cover of the spellbook is made of a dark, textured leather with silver embossing. The front cover depicts an intricate image of a shield, with a mountain range in the background. The edges of the pages are lined with silver, adding to the book's elegant design. As you can read in the back cover, it was the spellbook of the bodyguard of the Dwarven Lord, Dogan Steelheart, who left this epitaph:

"The Shield of the Mountain King, my most treasured possession, shall be buried with me upon my passing. This tome contains a lifetime of study and mastery in the art of abjuration. Through this book, I have dedicated myself to the protection of the Dwarven King and his kingdom. I am confident that my successor will continue this legacy and honor the craft as I have. May the magic contained within this book serve as a shield for those who hold it, as it has for me."

While you are attuned to the book, you gain +1 to Spell Attack rolls and Spell Save DC.

The book has three charges, which are restored after a long rest; you can use the charges in the following ways:

• If you spend one minute studying the book, you can spend a charge to swap any spell you have prepared with an abjuration spell contained in the book.
• If you spend ten minutes studying the book, you can spend two charges to restore a total number of spell slot level equal to twice your proficency modifier.
• As a reaction, you can spend a charge to impose disadvantage to any attack roll targeting a creature you can see, including yourself.

The book contains the following spells: Alarm, Antimagic Field, Arcane Lock, Counterspell, Featherfall, Fog Cloud, Glyph of Warding, Magic Circle, Magic Missile, Protection from Energy, Silence, Shield, Stoneskin, Wall of Force, Wall of Stone.

The book also contains a half-completed spell, Dogan's Deflection: the caster creates a protective field that redirects all incoming attacks towards himself, rendering them immune to any form of damage. The spell remains unfinished, and the instructions for completing it are missing from the tome.
