Weapon (yklwa), artifact (requires attunement)

This unique yklwa is touched by shadows and exudes wisps of shadow which look like dark smoke coming from the weapon. It was fashioned from the tail of the very Cloaker Lord who is trapped inside it.

Sentience. The Yklwa of Shadows is a sentient chaotic neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 17, a Wisdom of 17, and a Charisma of 16. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet.

The weapon communicates telepathically with its wielder and can speak, read, and understand Deep Speech, Undercommon, and Common.

Personality. A Cloaker Lord was captured and lives within the Yklwa of Shadows. The weapon has a devious and cleaver nature. It is most happy when its wielder is deceiving others, especially when that deception ends in the targets death. It is also annoyed at being eternally trapped inside its own tail. If it is wielded against a group with a magic caster in it, the Cloaker Lord urges its wielder to kill the caster first.

Dormant

The yklwa grants the following benefits in its dormant state:

  • You can speak, read, and write Deep Speech and Undercommon.
  • You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
  • Any creature identified as a foe to the wielder, that can see the blade being wielded, or hear (within 15ft) the hum of the blade as it moves through the air, must succeed on a DC15 Wis saving throw, to be rolled each turn, or be frightened until the beginning of their next turn.
  • This weapon also has 2 charges and regains all used charges each day after the sun sets. The charges can be used to cast the spell.... Shadow of Moil (however you do not receive the damage resistance or the extra damage property of the spell) ...or...Darkness (but the target of the spell must be the weapon itself).

Awakened

The yklwa grants the following benefits in its awakened state:

  • All the benefits from the dormant state.
  • An additional +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls.
  • Save DC increases to 17
  • If the Wis save is failed 3 times in a row, the target is now paralyzed until they succeed on the save.
  • An additional charge.
  • And additional minor benefit and minor detriment.

 

ARTIFACT PROPERTIES

Random Properties. The artifact has the following randomly determined properties:

  • 2 minor beneficial properties
  • 2 minor detrimental properties

 

A yklwa (pronounced YICK-ul-wah) is a simple melee weapon that is the traditional weapon of Chultan warriors. A yklwa consists of a 3-foot wooden shaft with a steel or stone blade up to 18 inches long. It costs 1 gp, and it deals 1d8 piercing damage on a hit. Although it has the thrown weapon property, the yklwa is not well balanced for throwing (range 10/30 ft.).
