On the outside they look like dark green leather pouches made from lizard skin. The pouches each weigh half a pound, regardless of their contents.

The creditor takes out the magical ledger that resides inside the pouch and enters their name, the debtor's name, the debt amount, monthly interest rate and monthly date of collection into the ledger. When they place the ledger back in the pouch and give it to the debtor, it activates, with the following consequences:

1. On the due date of an interest payment, the pouch changes colour from dark green to bright red.

2. When a payment (coins or any other valuables that fit in the bag) is made, the ledger automatically assesses the value and updates with the remaining total. If the payment is not sufficient to clear the current interest due, the bag turns orange and the remainder is still due by the end of the day.

3. If the payment of the full interest amount is not paid by the end of that day, the Minor Enforcer is triggered (see table). Full descriptions of the Minor Enforcers for the Small, Medium and Large pouches are listed here.
S. The pouch turns into a special version of the Magic Mouth spell, shouting "Where's my money?" every two minutes until the interest payment is made.
M. A Crawling Claw crawls out of the pouch and punches the debtor for 1D4 damage and then hangs around, mocking the debtor by wagging a finger at them until the interest payment is made.
L. A small but very hard Dust Mephit pops out of the pouch and deals the debtor 1D6 damage, cumulative for each consecutive payment missed. It hangs around, mocking the debtor until the interest payments are up to date.

4. Any items placed in the pouch, other than the ledger, are instantly transported to the creditor when the pouch is closed. There is no way to get them back from the pouch.

5. Payments may be made at any time. If any items are deposited with a cumulative value greater than the monthly interest due, the extra is removed from the current outstanding debt and the bag stays green on the next payment due day. The interest on the next due date will take this into account by recalculating the monthly interest amount which will fall due on the following payment date.

6. Once the whole debt is paid, the pouch dissapears from the debtor and returns to the creditor for re-use.

Using the pouches

Removing the ledger from the pouch requires an action. Placing payments or the ledger in the pouch requires an action.

Any item of value that can fit into the pouch can be sent to the creditor this way.

The value removed from the debt when an item is deposited is determined by the creditor's assessment of it (DM decision).

If a debtor needs more money, they can place a signed IOU note in the pouch for up to 10% of the original debt and the cash, or valuables to the same value, will appear in the pouch and the total debt will be updated in the ledger to reflect the increase. This can be done a  maximum of three times before the debt is paid off.

Misuse of the pouches

Most people that end up with this sort of debt are unhappy about having to pay up. The inventors of the Dastardly Pouches anticipated that and built in the following circumstances for when the debtor tries to get out of the debt:

1. If the debtor tries to lose the pouch or leave it hidden somewhere, it magically returns to them after a long rest and the interest rate increases by 0.10%.

2. If the debtor tries to pass on the pouch to someone else it will not open for that person and, during their next long rest, it magically returns to the debtor and the interest rate increases by 0.25%.

3. Any attempt to destroy the item results in the dispatch of the Major Enforcer related to the size of the bag (see table). Full descriptions of the Major Enforcers for the Small, Medium and Large pouches are listed here. All of them will disappear after three consecutive months of payments have been successfully made and a written apology has been placed in the pouch.
S. A Swarm of Insects appears at the location of the current debtor. After dealing 2D4+3 damage to the debtor, there will be at least one insect pestering the debtor at all times.
M. A Redcap appears at the location of the current debtor. After dealing 2D6+3 damage to the debtor, it becomes the debtor's constant companion, pestering the debtor at all times to pay up.
L. "D'Management" - an Iron Golem - appears at the location of the current debtor. After dealing 2D8+3 damage to the debtor, it becomes the debtor's constant companion and, if the debtor tries to do anything with money or treasure other than make basic subsistance purchases, it takes the money or loot by force and stuffs if in the bag.

Small Print

The debt is only transferrable on the irrevocable death of the debtor - and it will automatically transfer to the nearest person around the debtor at the time of their death, be they friend or foe. The debtor's name in the ledger automatically updates to reflect the change of debtor.

Notes: It has a handy belt loop to make it easy to carry. When you add it to your inventory, customise the name to identify which size pouch you have., Utility, Container
