Spider Climb. The spider can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.
Web Sense. While in contact with a web, the spider knows the exact location of any other creature in contact with the same web.
Web Walker. The spider ignores movement restrictions caused by webbing.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage, and the target must make a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. If the poison damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, the target is stable but poisoned for 1 hour, even after regaining hit points, and is paralyzed while poisoned in this way.
Web (Recharge 5–6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one creature. Hit: The target is restrained by webbing. As an action, the restrained target can make a DC 12 Strength check, bursting the webbing on a success. The webbing can also be attacked and destroyed (AC 10; hp 5; vulnerability to fire damage; immunity to bludgeoning, poison, and psychic damage).
Description
To snare its prey, a giant spider spins elaborate webs or shoots sticky strands of webbing from its abdomen. Giant spiders are most commonly found underground, making their lairs on ceilings or in dark, web-filled crevices. Such lairs are often festooned with web cocoons holding past victims.
It has normal vision, plus Darkvision 60ft, (can see in the dark), and Blindsight 10ft, (can "see" without using it's eyes).
It also has Web Sense, which is almost exactly what it says on the box. If it is touching a web, it knows the exact location of anything else in the web. And it's Web Walker allows it to ignore the stickiness of the web.
Meaning that, if you roll crap for stealth, yes, it will find you, poison you, liquefy your internal organs, and drink you like a bubble tea.
Happy Hunting!
Or play a druid... I'm currently playing a level 5 druid that can wild shape into other animals. As a druid with a backstory that would have encountered spiders (see any of its environments) it would have the ability to wild shape into that creature. This way he could also play other size spiders too, and experiment with something else, say a gnome. (I'm currently doing a forest gnome, hence encounter with spiders.)
Druids do have a few rules to learn. I think it depends on the comfort level - how old is your son? Has he played before, or would this be a first character? Is the group you'll play with patient?
My players, level 3, went to the Underdark because they felt like it. Today's session starts with 5 of these beasts.
lol.
I had an encounter with 2 giant spiders, and both had 26's on their stealth, and two of my pc's rolled nat 20's on their perception (they got a 26 and 27 total) and i was so mad. but it was fun because 1 of the pc's (one who spotted a spider) lit the building they were at on fire. it was so funny.
the text says: "If the poison damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, the target is stable but poisoned for 1 hour"
i read that as: if the poison were to kill you, you wouldnt need to make saving throws, cause youre only unconcious, but not critical.
if youre health already was at 0, than youre already "critical" and unconcious, and already were making saving throws.
theres nothing indicating that it automatically stabilises you.
Four. Large creatures are 10 ft by 10 ft
All I can say is....Ouch and good luck haha.
This monster has become a favorite for my Druid's Conjure Animals, great for restraining and subduing enemies
A large creature would be two blocks by two blocks :)
great for wildshape
Why does it have a +2 proficiency bonus? this isn't in the MM.
So...
The giant enemy spider?
HeathSmith
I'm pretty sure it's because the MM is older and LMoP came out after and they made a few changes. Plus, this is on the Web (unintentional joke 😂), specifically DDB.

All monsters have a proficiency bonus, the value of which is determined by their CR. I believe it was added to the stat blocks themselves fairly recently, but before that it was already used to determine things like attack bonuses (for example, the attack bonus for the bite attack here equals PB + Dex mod = 2 + 3 = +5).
yes Circle of the Moon Druid read about it and custom liniage can also allow for any humanoid some spiders are classed as that so both can work
My character has a pet giant spider. Its great
I’m a Druid bard and I chose this to be my animal friend took me a while to get one though my dm made it difficult but it was all worth it.
I’m sure it would be 4 blocks, as 5ft block, would fit 4 times into a 10ft block
4
Can you mount it in the Underdark if it is tamed like a wolf or horse? I mean it is a beast so by law, you should be able to tame it with poisoned meat or something? I need to talk to my DM about it I love Giant spiders!!!!
