Petrifying Gaze. If a creature starts its turn within 30 feet of the basilisk and the two of them can see each other, the basilisk can force the creature to make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw if the basilisk isn't incapacitated. On a failed save, the creature magically begins to turn to stone and is restrained. It must repeat the saving throw at the end of its next turn. On a success, the effect ends. On a failure, the creature is petrified until freed by the Greater Restoration spell or other magic.

A creature that isn't surprised can avert its eyes to avoid the saving throw at the start of its turn. If it does so, it can't see the basilisk until the start of its next turn, when it can avert its eyes again. If it looks at the basilisk in the meantime, it must immediately make the save.

Training. The basilisk learns one of the following tricks after 10 successful days of training (see description).

-Avert Gaze. The basilisk learns not to make eye contact with other creatures.

-Simple Commands. The basilisk can follow simple commands from its owner and gains any associated actions (Sit, Stay, Come, Roll Over, etc).

-Gaze. The basilisk learns the Gaze action.

-Grab/Shove. 1d20+5 The basilisk gains proficiency in Strength (Athletics). When performing the Grapple or Shove actions, the basilisk makes its check with advantage.

-Protect. The basilisk learns the Guard and Defend actions (must learn Gaze first).

-Sneak. 1d20+1 The basilisk gains proficiency in Dexterity (Stealth). When performing the Hide action, the basilisk makes its check with advantage. While exploring, the basilisk shares it's owner's stealth check.

Actions

Combat Actions. Dash, Disengage, Dodge, Grapple, Help, Hide, Shove

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6+3) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) poison damage.

The basilisk gains the following actions as it learns the associated tricks:

Defend. The basilisk defends the chosen creature or object. It will spend each turn readying an action to Bite anyone that attempts to attack the creature or take the object.

Gaze. The basilisk turns its Petrifying Gaze on the chosen creature. Because of the care needed to petrify only the intended target, the basilisk must use its action to focus on this task.

Guard. The basilisk guards the chosen creature or object. It will spend each turn readying an action to Gaze at anyone that attempts to attack the creature or take the object.

Roll Over. The basilisk uses its action to roll onto its back. Once done, the basilisk immediately calms and relaxes. Until the end of its next turn, its condition is indistinguishable from death. Within reason, the basilisk will remain on its back until otherwise commanded, or it gets hungry.

Stay. The basilisk will remain at its current location for up to 8 hours, doing everything it can to avoid harm, while awaiting the party's return. If no party members return in that time, the basilisk will wonder off to find food. A DC 12 Wisdom (Survival) is needed to locate the wayward basilisk.

Description

In combat, the basilisk shares your initiative count, but takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action on its stat block. If you are incapacitated, the basilisk can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

Training. A day of training is considered successful if the owner succeeds at a DC 15 Wisdom (Animal Handling) check. A natural 20 on this check counts as 2 successes. On a natural 1, the basilisk bites their owner causing this and the next training session to both count as failures. The owner can attempt this check after they spend one day of downtime or two days of uninterrupted travel training their basilisk.

A basilisk is a reptilian horror whose deadly gaze transforms victims into porous stone. With its strong jaws, the creature consumes this stone, which returns to organic form in its gullet.

In the Humblewood, basilisks only have four legs, rather than the usually eight. They also have shards of glowing crystal growing from their backs. These crystals are a popular commodity in the markets of the Alderheart.
