Shapechanger. The mimic can use its action to polymorph into an object or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Spacefarer.  The mimic does not need to breathe and ignores all adverse environmental effects from traveling through wildspace.

Adhesive (Object Form Only). The mimic adheres to anything that touches it. A Huge or smaller creature adhered to the mimic is also grappled by it (escape DC 13). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.  The mimic can dissolve or excrete its adhesive at will, requiring no action.

False Appearance (Object Form Only). While the mimic remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary object.

Grappler. The mimic has advantage on attack rolls against any creature grappled by it.

Improved Minor Illusion.  When the mimic casts minor illusion, it can create both a sound and an image with a single casting of the spell.

Innate Spellcasting. The mimic's innate spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 12). The mimic can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

At will: minor illusion

3/day each: invisibility, hypnotic pattern, phantasmal force

1/day each: arcanist's magic aura, fear

Spellcasting. The mimic is an 4th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 12, +4 to hit with spell attacks). The mimic has the following wizard spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will):  blade ward, mage hand, mending, prestidigitation, ray of frost

1st level (4 slots): absorb elements, mage armor, magic missile, shield

2nd level (3 slots): blur, mirror image, suggestion

Wildspace Camouflage (True Form Only). The mimic has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made while in in darkness.

Actions

Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage. If the mimic is in object form, the target is subjected to its Adhesive trait.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) acid damage.

Description

This rare strain of mimic was created from normal mimics by wizards to act as servants during for long voyages through wildspace, but soon proved unreliable.  After being discarded, they survived, reproducing by fission. Space mimics often pass themselves off as ship debris floating in wildspace, ornate chests, or elaborate wizard’s desks with books and scrolls aboard abandoned spelljamming ships.

Space mimics can levitate at will, which enables them to slowly travel across wildspace.  While in its true, amorphous form, a space mimic's skin is pitch black, with small specks of twinkling light, imitating the background of space, making them virtually invisible to the naked eye.

Space mimics are interested in magic and literature as much as they are in food. When visitors approach, the space mimic stays invisible to study the party. If it finds out there is a spellcaster among them, the space mimic tries to lure them somewhere alone, hypnotize them, steal any books, scrolls, or magical items in their possession, and then consume them. After eating a victim, the mimic goes into hiding. If the party remains, the undiscovered mimic may attempt to lure yet another member when it hungers again.

Space mimics are generally solitary creatures that enjoy spending their time reading books of lore, tomes on magic, and other arcane volumes. Unlike their common cousins, space mimics have various cultures, usually based on their readings. They are also more intelligent; they exchange books they have already read for ones they have not or for food. However, despite having a semblance of culture, space mimics have neither religious beliefs nor any laws.

Space mimics do not need to breathe, making sustenance their primary concern for survival.  When food is scarce, a space mimic reverts to its true form, blending in with the blackness of space, and goes dormant for up to three years, waking when it senses prey approaching. A good meal (one or two Medium-sized creatures) can sustain a space mimic for up to eight months.

Along with their adhesive, space mimics exude an odor that attracts rodents, space vermin, and occasional monsters as well, luring in prey that would otherwise be uninterested in mimic's object form.

Variant: Space Mimic Hoarder

Space mimics are known to collect magic items they steal from prey.  A Space Mimic Hoarder has a Challenge Rating of 6 (2,300 XP), though its proficiency bonus does not change.  A space mimic hoarder gains the following traits:

Special Equipment.  The mimic carries an enduring spellbook, a laser pistol, 5 (1d12 - 1) energy cells, 5 (1d12 - 1) spell scrolls, 2 (1d6 - 1) potions, 1 (1d4 - 1) wands, and 1 (1d4 - 1) wondrous items.  The DM chooses these items or determines them randomly from the options below.

1 scroll of burning hands potion of healing wand of magic detection alchemy jug
2 scroll of catapult potion of fire breath wand of magic missiles bag of holding
3 scroll of magic missile potion of growth wand of web brooch of shielding

With its laser pistol, the mimic can make the following attack as an action:

  • Laser Pistol. Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 40/120 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (3d6 + 2) radiant damage.

Ritual Casting:  The mimic can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag.  The mimic's spellbook contains the following ritual spells:
